Full Mac OS X running on Apple TV (with video)

A complete replacement to the Mac OS X kernel has been built by Hackint0sh.org collaborating with AppleTVHacks.net which allows the full version of Mac OS X to be run on an Apple TV.

“Semthex wrote a processor emulation for the kernel, to sidestep the hardware restrictions that previously disallowed Mac OS X from running on the Apple TV. AppleTVHacks.net was only too happy to help out, and when it turned out we needed more testers we launched a competition to get some. Within hours we had hundreds of eager Apple TV hackers submit entries. Several hours of testing and refining later and our tester, gimli, managed to follow the steps to get Mac OS X booting on his Apple TV,” AppleTVHacks.net.

AppleTVHacks.net has published the process that was used to turn the Apple TV into a full blown Mac OS X machine, including a link to Hackint0sh.org’s customised mach_kernel.prelink in the full article here.

  1. If this hack works here, why wouldn’t you be able to use to put OS X on any intel box?

You can. There is nothing special about Mac computers. Despite what the fanboys here say, they are nothing but cheap PCs in pretty boxes.

Fanboys will tell you, “who wants some crappy $300 beige box running OS X?” ignoring the fact that most crappy $300 beige box blow the Mini away (and they can even be upgraded)…

Hackers have beat Apple’s protection long ago with OSX86… Take a look HERE

The only reason Apple will not allow you to run it is because they need to sell their overpriced pretty boxes.

  2. @ Bob…

“Don’t you have a nose to stick up Ballmer’s rectum?”

What does running OSX on an Apple TV or a regular PC have to do with “Ballmer”???????

For your information, there are no longer any Windows boxes in my home (although I am required to use one at work). I have all Macs, and 1 Dell PC that runs OSX86.. At any rate, I don’t remember making any mention of MS or “Ballmer” in my post..

My point is this. OSX is an excellent operation system what runs very well on ANY PC (and only doesn’t easily because Apple doesn’t allow it to)…. As the Apple TV and iPhone have shown, it also runs on other platforms as well… My “Junky Dell” (as you fanboys like to call them) was cheaper than my Intel Mini, is upgradeable, and is much faster – yet they both run OSX very well….

Apple’s hardware is underpowered and overpriced. PERIOD! If they open up OSX to all PC’s, it will run quite well… But they will sell very few of their computers (except to people like you who droll over Steve’s “It’s really beautiful””)

  3. This product is a hackers wet dream. What a great way for Apple to creat buzz by putting a product on the market that can be customized. Not only is the product getting coverage in the main stream press, but every day many hacks are being reported to
    various sites.
    Work it Apple, work it.

  4. I hate these April fools articles that could very well be possible. You just can’t believe anything you read today. If your going to try to sucker gullible people into believing stupid things, at least make the articles really far fetched.

  5. “Apple’s hardware is underpowered and overpriced. PERIOD! If they open up OSX to all PC’s, it will run quite well…”

    APPLE IS A HARDWARE COMPANY

That’s where the profit is for it to exist.

    Mac’s, iPods, iPhones, AppleTV’s, iPod Doombox whatever…

Apple makes the OS and hardware together to provide a better user experience.

Apple picks better than than the average PC components as to insure a quality experience.

Sure one can buy a $200 Walmart laptop, BUT HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

Apple made 7 billion dollars profit on 75% of iPod market and 5% of the PC market.

Microsoft made 13 billion dollars profit on 95% of the OS market and is losing their ass on the hardware game and HD-DVD market to unnown billions.

Apple doesn’t sell hardware to the low margin sergment of the computing market, because there is little profit to be had there. It’s a drag to the company.

However your free to hack Mac OS X to put on your low end margin budget PC, knock yourself out.

  6. However your free to hack Mac OS X to put on your low end margin budget PC

WOOO HOOO Yeah I know Fan Boy, everything Apple makes is the BEST of everything and everything else is “low end margin budget” and “junky PCs”…

Let’s look at it a piece at a time shall we???

My Dell (that is running OSX) cost $699 with a 120 Gig HDD, keyboard, mouse, a real video card, 1 Gig of RAM)… I know, it’s a junky “low end margin budget” computer…

Now My Mini, let me tell ya.. Came with 512 Meg of memory, shitty integrated graphics (with no way to upgrade), and how about that slow little hard drive … You can use a putty knife to open it, and then disassemble about 10 things to get at the ram to add some (I did this).. I put it an additional Gig (and it only cost double what industry standard RAM costs).. WOOO HOOOO Fanboy!!!

Apple picks better than than the average PC components as to insure a quality experience.

WOOOO HOOOO Sure they do Fanboy, sure they do… Let’s see. My iBook G4 logic board failed 8 months after I bought it new in 05… And my Intel Mac Mini’s failed after 3 weeks last year (I got it fixed in 4 days by driving 200 miles to an Apple Store WOOO HOOO!!!

I understand Apple is a “Hardware Company”…. But they use the same junk as everyone else in pretty cases, and their computer are not as upgradeable as others… Instead of just WOOO HOOOOing Apple and Steve Jobs, try OSX86 on a “junky Dell”… You’ll see why (if comparing fairly against a Mini or iMac) Apple’s Hardware is Overpriced and underpowered… Any similar priced PC will BLOW APPLE’S HARDWARE AWAY WITH OSX LOADED!

Otherwise, just ignore everything and just yell the fan boy cheer “WOOOO HOOOOO Apple, I wanna kiss Steve Jobs’ ass”!!!!

  7. You’re absolutely right, Mac Fan. I think you should stop using those pretty, overpriced Mac boxes and use your putty knife to fit together better components than Apple offers. Surely there is another board out there for ingenious guys like you. Go get ’em!

  8. The date is an unfortunate coincidence. Remember these things have only been out in the wild since last week.

This is definitely not an April fools gag. This is the real deal.

Hacking the kernel of OS X to add SSE3 emulation (CPU extensions needed by OSX and not available on the Apple TV) is not all that difficult. Remember the MACH kernel is open source, and code to do this emulation already exists.

Even though it’s stuck at 1GHz and with only 256MB RAM, a fully functional Mac (less keyboard and display) for only $299 will be interesting to some folks. You need to own or have access to an Intel Mac to do this, and it’s certainly a crippled Mac, but still, for only $299, it could be worth it.

  9. Say “Hello” to the world’s first $299 Mac featuring a 1GHz Intel processor () with 256MB DDR2 SDRAM.

Welcome Apple to the “LOW MARGIN” arena of the computing market.

Poor shmucks like MacFan are not pleased because they want Mac OS X for free to place on their cobbled up PC hardware gleamed off the sidewalks and disposal bins.

    Hahahahaha!

  10. “You’ll see why (if comparing fairly against a Mini or iMac) Apple’s Hardware is Overpriced and underpowered… Any similar priced PC will BLOW APPLE’S HARDWARE AWAY WITH OSX LOADED!”

    Yeah, riiiight.

Then why does Windows run better on a Mac, as has been repeatedly demonstrated?
