Microsoft issues Vista patch to fix issue with Apple iPod

“Microsoft released several patches for Windows Vista on Tuesday, including one designed to put the iPod and the new operating system back on speaking terms,” Ina Fried reports for CNET News.

“The software maker issued a patch that is designed to fix a problem that had left iPods vulnerable to being corrupted if Vista users select the operating system’s ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ option to eject the music player,” Fried reports.

Fried reports, “Apple had resolved several Vista compatibility issues in iTunes, but has continued to warn users to only use the eject function within iTunes to remove an iPod in Vista.”

Microsoft’s “Safely Remove Hardware” option in Vista failed to safely remove hardware? Par for the course.

  1. I think Apple is waiting for Vista “mega” Service Pack 1 before acknowledging that iTunes is fully compatible with Vista. Based on these stories, it appears Vista is not even compatible with itself, much less third party software. Maybe Bootcamp will also not be stated as fully compatible until that time, which may explain that crazy “Leopard delayed until October rumor.” It’s just Bootcamp’s full compatibility with Vista that is delayed until October. That’s probably about the time Microsoft will issue the SP.

  2. I think Apple is using iTune to measure how much influence it has over the Windows users… Based on the information, they can plan if they need to release iTune for Vista (why release one, if iTune incompatibility can switch Windows users to OSX. They probably will eventually release or just announce iTune is Vista compatible. They will continue to delay the announcement until Windows to OSX switch rate comes down). I’m sure Apple has many software under wrap like Yellow Box and Windows API layer for OSX, which the information will help them decide if they should release the software or keep them under wrap.

  3. I can tell you from direct personal knowledge that the “Yellow box” idea died with Display Postscript. Amelio thought it up when we believed it was a necessary inducement to get developers to use Cocoa, which turned out not to be the case.

Let’s see now. The iPod works fine with OS X and always has. The iPod works fine with XP and always has. The iPod didn’t work with Vista until now. Hmmmm. So precisely WHO is at fault here, you moron?

(But, then again, perhaps your post was a very weak attempt at sarcasm. If so, please DO try again.)

  5. Every time I read an article from Ina Fried I get a horrid flashback of that video interview he/she did with Ballmer a few months ago. Monkeyboy and “I Don’t Wanna Be A Boy” on the same stage.

    Shudder.

  6. On a different note, I would love to see Apple start to diverge the capabilities in iTunes for Mac users vs. PC users. Can you imagine if Steve Jobs announces iTunes 7.2 with Leopard and describes a bunch of new powerful features in iTunes that can’t appear in the Winblows version because Vista isn’t enough of a technologically advanced OS to handle it. That would be the ultimate egg in the face of Microshaft!

Example: The patent that Apple received about a year ago for a way that iTunes can analyze the beat pattern in a song (even if it hasn’t been played yet, just imported) and determine its genre. That would be a sweet “Mac-only” addition to iTunes 7.2 that would just freakin’ eat at all the Windoze users out there.

I think Leopard will provide significant advancements in CoverFlow, due to Core Animation. Hopefully it will allow the album art to load up quicker, and use up less RAM. This is the main reason I never use CoverFlow – it’s far too resource hungry.

Obviously Vista does not have Core Animation, so CoverFlow will be just as RAM hungry.

  8. Wouldn’t it be great if there was still a standalone version of CoverFlow available for download somewhere that loads the album art a lot quicker and is much less of a resource hog than the iTunes-incorporated version? Yes, it would! (cough Macupdate cough)

MW cold – that must explain the coughing…

  9. Yup, CoverFlow was a standalone app, and a great one, but most of the early versions stopped working after a certain date and the final RC1 version does not. I’m surprised (and pleased) that it’s still available for download after Apple bought it and I think others may be interested in checking it out if they haven’t. It runs a lot more smoothly than the iTunes version, and is more organic in its display (shifting slightly as you move your cursor around the screen, etc.). The one caveat is that you need Tiger to run it, so I’m SOL with my 6- and 7-year-old iMacs that are stuck on Panther at home.

  10. Patches?

Does this mean that Turtle Boy and Fester’s love child has birth defects?

No wonder they’re both so antsy in interviews. Imagine what a Jo Jo, the Indian circus boy kind of freak Vista would be if they had included more of the features that got ripped out along the way.

I just hope Vista has DNR written into its living will.
