Love these hackers, they make the computer world a better place for the rest of us.
God bless them.
First post.
Apple has got to be loving this stuff.
Once we have 1080p, high-def, surround sound Diet Coke and Mentos spout-offs, TV will be complete. And Jackass the way it was meant to be seen.
Joost sounds like a great idea, but checking some of the channels they offer.. reveals some “available worldwide” … except for the “US and Canada” …
uhh arent we part of the “world” too ?
At any rate .. since its true that compitition drives quality up and prices down .. (except the oil companys, of course) … then if Joost takes off … Mediacom, Comcast and their ilk should be shakin’ in their boots !
MW=”plane” …”Boss .. Da Plane ! Da Plane !!”
@Wiseguy: Ditto.
Apple doesn’t really care what you do with TV. Hack it all you like.
Apple is a hardware company. At $300 they are probably making $60 or more on every TV. This is not a loss leader to make money on subscriptions or software or digital media like cell phones or game consoles.
Buy them and hack your brains out. Apple is laughing with you, all the way to the bank.
Now, we need to see Apple provide a way to include these hacks into the AppleTV. This would make for a really compelling product. I’m sure Apple knew how easily it could be hacked.
what the hell is joost?
You just got to love AAPL and Steve Jobs.
How do you clean Joost off of your AppleTV if you get some on it?
joost?: Google? What the hell is Google?
Apple may be set to sell about, oh I dunno, maybe 700,000,000 Apple TV’s?
Makes my estimate for iPhone of 10m in 2007 and 25m in 2008 look a bit puny.
Seriously, what the hell is Joost?
I’ve never heard of it either.
To all those who asked
http://www.joost.com
Surf around and learn about it … Cool idea, really..
and, if sucessful, the cable companys might hafta do something drastic to maintain their customer base…
Like, maybe… oh, I dunno … drop all the crap channels they spoon feed you, and lower their prices !
(From wikipedia)
“Joost (pronounced ‘juiced’) is interactive software for distributing TV shows and other forms of video over the Web using peer-to-peer tv technology, created by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis (founders of Skype and Kazaa).”
And you can’t try the beta unless you get invited. A bit lame.
“the whole concept behind Joost is to provide a framework to advertisers with a more accurate read of the demographics and do a better job of target advertising.”
Ugh – no thanks, not for me. I don’t want any advertising at all in my television. With downloaded TV shows, I don’t have any.
And I certainly don’t want my viewing habits turning into marketing data. The loss of privacy is not worth it, especially since I have good alternatives (e.g. downloaded TV shows, mentioned above).
So no thanks, Joost.
Oops, forgot to mention that the source for the “whole concept behind Joost” comment is the article to which MDN links above, i.e.:
http://www.joostteam.com/2007/03/27/joost-successfully-run-on-apple-tv/
(See comment posted at 08:13 in that web page.)
In my view, any product whose purpose or effect is to give advertisers more detailed information about me and my viewing habits is anti-consumer and invades my privacy.
Made from the guys who started Skype.
Ehhhh, I’ll wait for Rev. 2 or 3 before I get an Apple TV.
Free tv without commercials? Someone’s getting screwed. Sounds illegal.
Shogun, Joost is full of commercials. That’s the whole point of it – to target advertising to the people who use the service.
But there are plenty of legal ways to watch TV shows without advertising. Nothing illegal about.
For example, if you download TV episodes, e.g. from iTunes, these don’t have commercials. Nothing illegal about that.
HBO doesn’t interrupt programming for commercials.
PBS shows don’t have commercials.
The BBC (in the UK, not BBC America) doesn’t have any commercials.
Etc etc etc.
Once you’ve gotten used to watching shows without advertising, you can’t go back – at least I can’t.
And I certainly will not give up my privacy just so a company can target their advertising back at me.
Have you actually SEEN the picture quality on an AppleTV? It sucks! Why would you want to watch “live” television on it, when it can handle “pre-recorded” well?
Does anyone else get a bout of cognitive disonance with this line?:
“Once Joost goes live you will get free, unlimited TV experience in your living room for less than 300$”
“Free TV” “less than $300” ??? Okay, Free is less than $300, but I don’t think that is what it means.
Nice catch, I missed that one, and I’m normally pretty good at picking stupid lines off.
I was really hoping someone would do this. I’m glad they can. Now if only Apple would open up the USB port so that all we have to do is plug the ?TV into a computer to get the goods.
But I bet all this and more is coming. Hey, they call it a “Platform” right?
