Hidden details from Steve Jobs’ Apple iPhone keynote

For those who haven’t yet seen this, ACTV near the end of February posted a video on YouTube that looks at “four things about the iPhone that you probably overlooked from Steve Job’s MacWorld keynote. They include what the calendar application looks like, how you’ll view traffic in Google Maps, another way to scroll through long lists and how ringtones may ultimately work.”

  1. Re: ringtones.

I bet that there will be an option when buying tracks from the iTunes store to also download a version of the song to be used as a ringtone. That way, the ringtone would already start at an interesting part of the song. Or, Apple could alternatively offer a ringtone creation tool built into iTunes to select the portion of the song you want to use as a ringtone, and then save it as such. The ringtones tab would then allow you to set your ringtone preferences as far as assigning different tones to different callers and such. I don’t see Apple offering seperate ringtone purchases in addition to regular song purchases…and raping everyone on the price. That’s just one of the many ways the carriers screw us consumers (actually not me, since I’ve never bought one). ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Buying the song and then either offering the free corresponding ringtone or the ability to create one from the track seems much more Apple.

That would be the coolest, and that’s certainly what I would want, so I’m hoping Apple does this. I will be very disappointed if they perpetuate the over-priced download model.

  3. HAH! I’m not buying a 30 second Ringtone for more than a 99 cent full-track from the itunes music store…chances are, the ringtone would be the 30-sec clipped sample that iTunes already has for the preview of the full track. LAME if they try to charge more for these.

  4. That was interesting and fun to watch. I wonder how many of Apple’s employees are using iPhone on a daily basis (as I assume Steve is), in order to both work out bugs and also to add needed features when tested in a non-lab situation?

    Does anyone out there know?

  5. It is possible that iTunes will offer specially designed song files for use as ringtones (probably for 99 cents each). However, that tab in the iPod settings is probably there for another function.

First, you can simply select one of the include ringtones or (if offered) one of the ringtones you can buy from the iTunes Store. (That’s just a select and OK function. You wouldn’t need a separate tab for that.)

Second, you can select any song in your library. However, you cannot just use a song as a ringtone because the beginning of most songs would not make a good ring tone. So the interface on this tab will allow you to select a segment of the song to use as a loop for the ringtone.

  6. What I’m disappointed with is lack of voice activation, lack of video camera, lack of 3G support, lack of live webcam conferencing support, lack of vibration alert, anemic memory, and totally non-upgradeable hardware. Maybe the finished product will pleasantly surprise me.

  7. This is an ancient, ancient story….. from months ago, as noted.

Steve Jobs is NOT going to make you buy songs twice- the full song + the ringtone- that’s simply ridiculous. It’s not his way, or Apple’s. What, are they going to create a separate ringtone version of every song they sell? Or is it all going to be Britney, Christina and Bono, all the time?? Who’s going to decide what drivel to turn into ringtones?

If anything, there will be some cool little app that allows you to cut a snippet of any song to make your own. You’ve already bought it to play on your iPod, so you certainly have the right to play a snippet of it on command.

  8. ChrissyOne,
I think the ringtone thing will be in there. I, too, hope that Apple doesn’t start selling ring tones no matter what the freakin’ price!

It’s crazy to pay over $2 for a 10 second song clip.
