USA Today on switching: Apple Macs can also be screaming-fast Windows machines

Apple Store“Reluctant to switch to a Macintosh because so much of your favorite software requires Microsoft Windows? Now you don’t have to hold back,” Edward C. Baig reports for USA Today.

“Apple’s free Boot Camp beta software can also make your Intel-based Mac a screaming-fast Windows machine. But when you turn your computer on, you must choose to work in either Windows or Mac’s OS X Tiger,” Baig reports.

Baig reports, “That’s why I’ve been more intrigued by Parallels Desktop for Mac. The $80 “virtualization” software lets you run the Mac’s operating system and Windows side-by-side… If you just bought a Mac and are retiring an old PC, you can transfer Windows (plus programs and data) from that old computer to the Mac using a new migration tool called Parallels Transporter.

“The most dramatic enhancement in Parallels is called Coherence, a feature that lets you run Windows applications (Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc.) directly on the Mac desktop. Windows icons appear on the strip of programs on the Mac known as the Dock. If seeing the Windows taskbar above the Dock is disconcerting, you can switch to a full-screen Windows view,” Baig reports.

“For mainstream users who need to run a Windows app or two on their Mac, Parallels is a fine program that has come a long way,” Baig reports.

  2. Want to show the world have scream fast Macs are? Setup and run a grid project. Currently, a small percentage of distributed computing is done by Macs – somewhere on the order of 2.6%. I know the market share of Macs is higher than that, so let’s show them how fast Mac’s really are.

Register, download, install and run it at:
    http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/reg/viewRegister.do

I have setup a team here called “Mac Daily News.”

You can join multiple projects at a time. Donate your spare CPU cycles and show the world the power of the Mac. Currently, we are looking very meager, which makes us look smug to the rest of the world. Show the world that we aren’t.

  3. @Jake

Clearly it is a slow news day and all the Mac wits are out and about. Personally I would rather read these funny comments over all the political bullcrap that has been doggin these posts lately.

I like reading MDN for this very reason. Laughter is good for you…try it.

  4. I believe a more mature derivation of the phrase “screaming fast” might have something to do with what people tend to do while they are riding rather precipitously down the steeply angled slopes and around the curves of a rollercoaster.

    Just my 2¢.
