Record-breaking attendance for Macworld Conference & Expo 2007 [UPDATED]

Apple StoreIDG World Expo has announced record-breaking results from the attendance certification audit performed by BPA World Wide for Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, held January 8-12, 2007. The number of overall visitors increased 19% from the 2006 event with 45,572 attendees in 2007, compared to 38,441 in 2006.

“The increase in attendance revealed in the BPA audit is a great exclamation point to what was an outstanding event,” said Paul Kent, vice president, IDG World Expo, in the press release. “The Mac market is a vibrant and robust environment that continues to attract new customers for the most innovative products in the world. We look forward to carrying this momentum forward as we work towards an even bigger event in 2008 with new expo attractions and conference content.”

The show featured hundreds of product announcements, dynamic attendee attractions, more than 100,000 square feet of exhibit space featuring almost 400 of the most innovative companies serving the Mac community, and the strongest educational conference offerings of the event’s 23 year history. This year also marked an expansion into the North Hall of Moscone Center with the “Digital Lifestyle Experiences,” a collection of new interactive exhibitions featuring training and activities focusing on three blossoming creative technology areas – digital photography, music & sound, and gaming.

“Macworld 2007 exceeded our expectations,” said Hugh Amick, vice president, HP Mac-connect, in the press release. “Our booth was continually busy and the attendees, from teachers to pro photographers, were very excited and engaged. We’re already signed-up and looking forward to next year’s event.”

Next year’s Macworld Conference & Expo is scheduled to take place January 14-18, 2008 at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

MacDailyNews Note: Record? On Jan. 16, 2001, IDG World Expo and Apple announced that a record of over 93,000 people attended the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco. [UPDATED with this note on Mar. 15, 2:00pm EDT. Thanks, Andrew.] IDG has responded: IDG World Expo Management used an attendee accounting practice called “Turnstyle” accounting when reporting event attendance. With Turnstyle accounting attendance is measured by how many people come through the door – if an attendee leaves the building for lunch and comes back – he is counted twice. This is how attendance was reported in 2001. Beginning in 2004 we instituted an attendance audit, conducted by a 3rd party to verify actual attendance. We feel confident that this accounting and audit process provides our exhibiting customers are better way to measure their ROI.

  1. Wallace — you can’t judge the “success” of MacWorld by the Keynote alone. Sure, there were no Mac products introduced by Apple (and let’s face it, the iPhone is NOT a Mac even with OS X installed), but there was plenty of activity in the conference sessions (the real meat of the conference) and on the exhibit floor. There were some great products introduced — a few I even laid down some disposable income on.

I’d say that the proof that Apple is truly back can be judged by how many companies are making products that support it — and there was a lot more than just iPod stuff there…

  2. More importantly, let’s hope for record-breaking attendance and participation at the WWDC in June.

And Buster, they’re going to have multiple tracks. Let’s hope no one derails?

  3. “So… How can 2007 be “record-breaking results” with only 45,572 attendees!”

Because IGN changed to an accurate method of auditing Macworld attendance, the 93,000 is not accurate because that number came from the old method of tracking attendance.
