“Financial experts at UBS Investment Research say they believe Apple Inc. is developing a ‘mega-platform’ based around its recently introduced multi-touch display technology that will facilitate broad growth opportunities through an assortment of future products,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.
Lane reports, “In a research note issued Tuesday, analyst Ben Reitzes encouraged his clients to look past the minute details of the initial iPhone and focus on the power that lies in the ‘unannounced’ multi-touch ecosystem that will eventually find its way into several products across the company’s product portfolio. ‘We believe this ‘Mega-Platform’ could help Apple become an ‘open-ended’ growth story once again with a logical chronology of new products for years to come,’ the analyst wrote.”
“The UBS analyst said he expects the new platform to become prevalent in each of the consumer electronics maker’s major hardware products within 3-5 years, possibly sparking touchscreen Macs later this holiday season or sometime in 2008. Among his expectations are touch-screen iMacs, as well as ‘tablet-like’ notebook devices that provide basic computing without the need for a keyboard or stylus if the user desires to keep the device closed,” Lane reports.

OOOOOHHH ! ! ! MEGA-platforms!
Not to be confused with:

Mega Millions
Meg A. (as she’s known in rehab)
Canadian Mega Brands contruction blocks for kids
Twisted…. don’t forget Mega Builder… a athletic “supplement” you can buy online.
I’m just sayin…
Don’t forget Mega-Lo-Mart LOL.
Don’t forget
Megatron.

Apple will soon leave the PC world far behind. The dark ages will finally be over and we can leave these 30 year old technologies behind. i.e. the mouse and the current GUI. Finally! Think where we might be now if Job’s vision had not been derailed in the 1980’s!
DUH!!
Where do these anal-ists come from?
Everyone knows about the pioneering touch screen technology and software created by MIT.
Everyone knows Apple, especially Steve Jobs, finds anything “cool” someone created and incorporate it into products to sell.
1: Xerox Parc (GUI and mouse)
2: iPod (created by a engineer and brought idea to Apple)
3: iTunes Visuals (done by a third party)
4: CoverFlow (ditto above)
5: MIT touch screen techology (notice two fingers needed to enlarge a photo? That’s the same MIT tech)
Now all you need to do is find something “cool” and have Apple buy you out. Live rich forever and ever.
Unless your Anna Nicole and walk around sick and ignore it.
Uuggghh… Imagine all of those nasty kids sticky fingers all over the gorgeous screen of your 24inch iMac!!!
I guess you would need to have a box of wipes on every mac users desk from that time forward.
Sounds pretty cool though…
MDN word “level”
as in Apple are going to take computing to the next level and leave MS further behind.
MIT doesn’t make consumer electronics. If they never did, we would never have multi-touch without Apple (or someone) to bring it to market for us. This is how tech economics work.

Mega Virgin stores…errrr….or was that Virgin Mega stores. Either way they are BIG!

All I can think of is that movie with Tom Cruise where he is interacting with a screen-less computer by moving icons and windows with his fingers…
I can’t think of the name of the movie though…
The movie was “Minority Report.”
Also,
“I guess you would need to have a box of wipes on every mac users desk from that time forward.”
Don’t worry; Apple will introduce the “iWipe” and sell millions.
The movie was “Megarity Report” or something like that there.
Huh. I thought I had the first 3 posts on this thread. I guess it was just a MDN nightmare.
Don’t forget MEGA-Body da stripper (opps I’m revealing too much about my self)
On another note: Wasn’t the click-wheel invented by Bang & Olufsen? My 1997 B&O home phone has a circular click wheel that allows you to scroll to contact list + a center button to press dial … Apple had to have gotten this idea from B&O. Anyone aware/ have any info about this?
And mega is an anagram for game!
See. Proof that Apple is serious about the games market!
Oh well. Enough of that. And now back to my Tina Fey in a big bowl of lime Jell-O fantasy.
wiseguy…ya i agree..as far that they did not “invent” those technologies being used in there superb procducts. But really, do you fully expect that every component inside a great product is expected to be invented and patented. You think that Honda invented everything that goes in there great products. One thing that they inderectly sell you is the “vision”. Honda..they sell you a great car that is very efficient when it comes to gas comsumption. Apple inc they sell you a product that is focus on the user experience.

Wiseguy
Apple doesn’t often do things first, however they are usually the first to do those things right.
The “analysts” are finally catching on.
This thread is UltraMegaOkay.
You people need to pay attention to these patent filings. Most of touching will be basically done on a “track pad”. You will only need to touch your screen for specific editing (Photos, video). Other than that the only time you will be touching you screen is when you want to, or you want to clean it. Haven’t you all seen Final Cut? It’s a movie with Robin williams. He plays a Biographer of sorts.
MDN word: Programs, as in, please read your programs so you don’t have to speculate about what the future of our platform is.
