NPD: Mac sales grew 108% in January

Pacific Crest Securities has reiterated their $130 price target on Apple Inc. (AAPL).

The firm says NPD data shows accelerating Mac sales momentum this quarter.

Pacific Crest notes that total Mac sales grew 108% year-over-year in January (vs. 55% YOY in December) as strong notebook sales continue to drive share gains.

Sales of Mac portables grew 194% YOY in January.

Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider, “‘Mac ASPs grew 4 percent in January on a year-over-year basis and 1 percent sequentially,’ wrote Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves. ‘Apple’s ability to maintain stable ASPs is a strong indicator of its brand equity and consumer demand, in our view… January was the third-largest revenue month for Mac notebooks ever.”

  1. I’m sure much of the sales increase was due to people realizing and accepting that there was new no Mac hardware at MacWorld and holding out wasn’t going to benefit them as in past years.

    Still, very good news indeed!

  2. These figures are all the more remarkable when you consider that very large numbers in the Mac community are holding out (like myself) until Leopard hits the market.
It suggests that most of these sales are to ‘switchers’.

  3. I swear by whatever Gods may be that when Leopard, iLife, iWork, iPhone, viPod, revamped Macs, and the like hit the market by mid-summer that the proverbial dam will finally burst on AAPL! $130 may actually be a conservative target on the stock!

  4. “..It suggests that most of these sales are to ‘switchers’..”

Yeah, Toby .. and one has to wonder if all the bad press Vista is
currently getting (even on PC-centric blogs) — will drive even
more and more “switchers” over from the Dark Side …

Well … one can only hope !

  5. Wow. My guesses on why this is going on:
    – The iPod halo effect is finally kicking in, with millions of people getting their iPods for Christmas. Now it’s just as ‘cool’ to get a Mac as it is to get an iPod.
    – All those people switching to Intel Macs last year, especially during the second half of 2006 are not going unnoticed by others.
    – Vista being the straw that broke people’s back concerning Microsoft and Windows. Maybe there truly are lots of those who think, “man, this bloated piece on zuneware seems to suck even more than XP and everybody is saying it’s just a bad copy of the Mac OS, maybe I should give the Mac a try…”

And think of it: this is just the beginning. 10 % market share, here we come…

“I’m sure much of the sales increase was due to people realizing and accepting that there was new no Mac hardware at MacWorld and holding out wasn’t going to benefit them as in past years.”

Your logic doesn’t work because if Apple released a new product the sales would have been even more, not stagnant

  7. These numbers are fantastic!!

In our small buisness we started switching last July, with an iMac 20″, since then 2 macbooks,

Just waiting for a dual 2 core mini, to retire our other 3 HP desk tops,

and I am sure I don’t need to mention what our next cell phones will be!!

  8. “(And either the death or legal banishment of IE only websites.)”

    Amen!

Speaking as a professional web developer, there is simply NO EXCUSE for these sites to exist.

It is just incompetence, lazyness, arrogance or all of the above on the part of the hacks that build those Windows only sites.

If a developer is worth a crap, they build based on established standards for ALL browsers. If they are incapable of supporting everything being used out there, then they have no business calling themselves a professional web developer.

Just vote with your wallets folks!

Considering that Mac users have more disposable income than your average Joe Windows user, companies that discriminate against non-Windows users deserve to fail.
