A windows pc as long as it is free standing should be fine from a secure stand point If it was hooked to a network and especially on the web that might be a different story but lets face it any system used for life support will have one program on it and thats it it isnt a multi use computer so of course windows 98 would be secure on it even. So the whole thing is really suppose to impress us but if you think about it thats not where the security issues comes into play

Why does “Silence of the Lambs” come to mind when I think of people using Vista to run life support?
Security isn’t the only thing required. reliability is the other. Freedom from devastating bugs that could cause a crash, or lockup of the system, is even more important in medical systems.
XP and earlier OS’s from MS specifically EXCLUDE medical systems, nuclear reactors, etc.
I wonder if Vista has the same stated limitations. If so, to say that only proper management is required, is a dangerous lie.
A life support computer would not be stand alone. It would be monitored from a central nurses station down the hall or in another part of the hospital wing. Otherwise, how could medical personnel respond to a medical emergency? This all means it is networked and subject to being hacked. Really, really scary.

Vista would not make it past step one in a safety audit. The requirements for safety critical software are draconian in the extreme.
