Report: Apple to introduce and ship 15.4-inch MacBooks in second quarter

“Apple is planning to introduce 15.4-inch MacBooks in the second quarter of 2007, according to industry sources in Taiwan. The new model will fill the gap between the company’s 13.3-inch MacBooks and the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros that form its current notebook line up, and is expected to boost shipments of Apple’s Intel-powered MacBooks, the sources add,” Ruby Huang and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“MacBook shipments are expected to reach 700,000 units in the first quarter of 2007, after enjoying substantial gains in the second half of 2006, say the PC makers. However, shipment growth for the whole of 2007 is likely to be even greater than that of the first-quarter following the introduction of the 15.4-inch model in the second quarter, the sources noted,” Huang and Shen report.

Huang and Shen report, “Currently, 13.3-inch MacBooks are manufactured by Asustek Computer, while the new 15.4-inch model will be made by Quanta Computer, which also manufactures the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros for Apple. Foxconn is said to have been in the running for the lucrative 15.4-inch manufacturing contract but was eventually unsuccessful, the sources report.”

  1. Where’s the 12″ ? Surely it can’t be that hard if Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and Fujitsu all offer them. Whether you’re schlepping it through IAD, ORD, LHR, CDG, NAR, or just down to the local Starbucks, every ounce is a pain. My laptop will always be a second computer, I have no interest in a 15″ or 17″ when I can sit at a 20″ iMac or a 23″ monitor all day. When I hit the road, I accept limited screen real estate in exchange for portability.

My 12″ G4 is showing it’s age and I’m frustrated with the current offerings. If the 13″ MacBook is the best Apple can do in the lightweight department, I suppose I’ll swallow it, but I’ll be gnashing my teeth for the next 3 years until I can justify another replacement.

What I’d really like to see is a whole range of portable computing devices with the iPhone at the bottom end, various tablet like things in the middle, an ultraportable notebook, and then the MacBooks and Pros at the top end. Everyone can select their own level of portability. Sure WinCE and various tablets have been failures, but if all of these could run OSX? Come on, Apple!

  2. If Apple ships a 15″ MacBook, why would anyone buy a 15″ MacBook Pro?

    – More USB ports
    – FW800
    – Better graphics card
    – Backlit keyboard
    – More memory
    – Aluminium
    – Some other TBA features that end up being in MBP, but not in MB

  3. Can all you dudes with nothing better to do but argue about grammar please take it somewhere else?? It’s really irritating to have to wade through, and doesn’t do anything for your attempts to look smart, esp. since you’re all anon anyway. Give it a rest, eh?

    Well said…

I am with those who want a 12″ Macbook Pro. I have a 17″ Powerbook which has been great as a desktop replacement but i am using it for development now and it can be slow at times. I nearly bought a used 12″ powerbook after seeing several of them at airports etc. Gorgeous. The Macbook is ok-looking, but i love my aluminium powerbook – it is such a fabulous piece of industrial design…

12″ display, aluminium case, no drive – superportable and superlight. That would do me fine.
