Report: Apple to introduce and ship 15.4-inch MacBooks in second quarter

“Apple is planning to introduce 15.4-inch MacBooks in the second quarter of 2007, according to industry sources in Taiwan. The new model will fill the gap between the company’s 13.3-inch MacBooks and the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros that form its current notebook line up, and is expected to boost shipments of Apple’s Intel-powered MacBooks, the sources add,” Ruby Huang and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“MacBook shipments are expected to reach 700,000 units in the first quarter of 2007, after enjoying substantial gains in the second half of 2006, say the PC makers. However, shipment growth for the whole of 2007 is likely to be even greater than that of the first-quarter following the introduction of the 15.4-inch model in the second quarter, the sources noted,” Huang and Shen report.

Huang and Shen report, “Currently, 13.3-inch MacBooks are manufactured by Asustek Computer, while the new 15.4-inch model will be made by Quanta Computer, which also manufactures the 15.4- and 17-inch MacBook Pros for Apple. Foxconn is said to have been in the running for the lucrative 15.4-inch manufacturing contract but was eventually unsuccessful, the sources report.”

  1. I second pog’s request for a lightweigt MB pro. I’m very tired of carrying my 17″ all over the world, and have held off for buying something else waiting for Apple to fill this hole in their product line.

  2. Quite a few of the peecee laptop manufacturers are using 11″ widescreen panels. Drop the optical drive and with Apple’s designers you could end up with a very small, light and powerful machine.

  3. First looprumors, and now Digitimes. When have either got any of their rumors right? Digitimes was all over the 15.4″ G5 rumor I seem to recall. MDN dragging the bottom of the barrel again for page hits?

  4. I’d buy the 15.4 today if it existed. My wife needs to replace her 15.1 iBook that’s failing and doesn’t want to lose the screen size she currently has if she went with the 13.3. We understand the resolution is higher but everything is smaller on the screen. We want higher resolution that’s not teeny tiny.

  5. “According to nasdaq AAPL are now down.
Not up as MDN are showing.”

What’s with making everything plural? AAPL are? MDN are?

AAPL is a stock ticker which represents ONE company. It is one thing not multiple things.

MDN is one thing also, not multpile things.

Apple, Inc. is also ONE thing. Why do so many people write Apple are doing this or that etc.? It should be written (and spoken) as Apple is, not Apple are. Apple is an entity, i.e. one thing. “Apple” is singular, not plural.

  6. so someone is suggesting that Apple make a ultra portable — super lightweight Macbook…with no Optical drive..

NO THANKS! — what’s next? no USB/FIREWIRE ports? 9V battery for power? no Keyboard, we’ll just use telepathy?

sorry, guys but that just really stinks as an idea.
