  1. I think history will be far more kind to Bill Gates than Greg L (above) does.

You have no idea how badly behaved the Rockefellers, Carnegies, JP Morgan, and other robber barons were in their day. Most of that is forgotten now, a century or more later.

The same will be true of Bill and Melinda Gates 100 years from now.

Developing a vaccine for malaria, funding widespread vaccination against childhood diseases, addressing AIDS in Africa, finding new cures for leishmaniasis, helping homeless families, calling attention to third world problems that go unaddressed by capitalism and globalization — these are the building blocks of the philanthropic record upon which the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be judged.

  2. With all of the problems that Vista is having with installation, hardware drivers, etc, lets just give Apple a little break here. Regardless of what we think Apple should have been doing before Vista was released, they will get the updates out in short order – I’m fully confident of this. Why? Because regardless of what platform is used, Apple’s windows customers who own iPods, hold Apple accountable to do this. There are a lot of them out there too.

Remember that Vista code had a lot of changes made in the 11th hour, and most vendors have waited for the final code to be released first.

Note too that Apple customers are still waiting for an intel version of Microsoft Office.

  3. I think Apple is being rather childish about this and with iTunes they’re either incompetent in not doing their testing or are playing a dangerous game.

What would happen if Microsoft announced that MS Office didn’t work on the next version of OS X? There would be outrage. Apple need to spend more time communicating the positives of Apple and OS X instead of just slagging off Vista. Vista’s getting enough poor or lukewarm press that it doesn’t need Apple having a go, it just makes some people resent Apple more.

  4. Apple,

You’ve had FIVE years to make these apps compatible. WTF is the problem?

Then again, considering Vista is just a bloated XP, there’s no excuse for anything to break. Forget quality, one has to wonder if MS really spent their time figuring out how to break apps.

    Do I smell a double double-cross?

  5. Why is this an issue since the goal is for PC users to switch?
    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

Al, don’t get me started on Office. I bought 8 licenses for Office for X, and Microsoft STILL has not made it fully compatible with OS X.

Ever try to view Tasks from Outlook sesrver on a Mac? Ever try to view Contact folders on Outlook Server from a Mac? Get real.

  6. To where’s the rat?:

Apple had to wait until Vista was released because they were not sure what functionality Microsoft was going to drop next from Vista.
    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

    SP3 in a Box, baby.

  7. Guys. Some of you think that Steve jobs gives a damn about Office. Well think about this. How hard is it to make a good Office suite? One that can read and write MS Office Docs? And now they are going to output in XML format it is just getting easier.

If Microsoft pull the plug so what. In many ways Apple already have a way nicer suite of Office Apps. Keynote is already a PPT beater and Pages does pretty much everything the average user needs plus it allows those with no taste to use templates. There’s already rumours about a new spreadsheet app. Hopefully we will get a choice of either the traditional style or a modeller like Lotus Improv. Personally I wish they would buy Flexisheet and finish it. It showed promise.

In general, Apple’s line-up of software is much slicker than MS’s Look at what Apple either developed from scratch or own. Final Cut Pro. DVD Studio Pro, Shake, Motion, Logic, etc. etc. Compare the quality and simple power to the MS Office suite and why worry. I would switch to an Apple Office suite tomorrow. I have Neo Office at the mo and it has all you need but I just think MS Office and all of the open source clones are just too damn bloated.

Looks lie an OS storm is brewing and I think it’s MS’s time to go down.

  8. The word is antitrust. M$ better not be doing anything directly to prevent Apple, Inc. from being able to successfully port its software, such as QuickTime and iTunes, onto any and all flavors of Windows Vista. Let’s hope Steve’s lawyers are on this.

  9. Hell, Vista is not even compatible with itself, Intel, Windows boxes, hardware in general, common sense, fair play, the real world, Microsoft’s intentions, consumer rights, security software, Norwegian porn (Rudolph the [MW: red] nose…). The only thing Vista is compatible with is grief! And malware, of course, Microsoft’s signature innovation.

  10. Some ass-wipe appropriated (forged) my screen name with the second entry (about loving Gates). Actually… I probably WOULD love him if I had him over for lunch. I’d eat his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

P.S., this is my last entry today. Anyone else using Greg L here is an imposter (and likely a virgin who’s still living in his parent’s basement). Looser.

  11. Vista is shit ITS going Down! I hate vista: OK so PC users Some of which are

and it shows that people enjoy design, & invention.

Vista is stopping this now. Linux will take over this area, Games could be
console now are and mayby passing a stage.
Game makers have been stuck with windows also, but they could make a OS for

  12. Greg L (the real one),

You are right about Microsoft. Microsoft killed Word Perfect with the “Windows is not done until Word Perfect won’t run” policy when MS transitioned to Windows from DOS. MS is evil.

As for hijacking posters handles, I wish MDN would ban all posts from these asshole identity thieves — no mercy.
