“New features emerging in Apple’s next generation portable media player could enhance connectivity and convenience. However some changes may cause current Apple partners grief,” Daniel Jacobs reports for International Business Times.
Jacobs reports, “In a note delivered to clients on Monday, research analyst Jesse Tortora said that Apple’s next generation video-iPod may include significant changes, adding a larger screen and potentially, internet capabilities. ‘The next gen video ipod[s] are expected to include a wider touch screen, wi-fi and GPS,’ he said.”
Jacobs reports, “The addition of GPS functionality should position the iPod as the central hub for all digital content (music, movies, GPS) in automobiles, the researcher explained.”
Jacobs reports, “Apple may also shift away from hard-drive technology in its next generation video player one analyst contends, causing a potential shakeup in the disk storage market. ‘Our checks indicate that Apple may not proceed with its next generation hard disk drive (HDD) based video iPod design, transitioning instead to NAND flash as soon as late ’07,’ Tortora told clients.”

Nope.
While there may be models in the 8 to 10 GB range that use only flash memory, I have to believe that there will still be HD’s that are in the 60-80-100 GB range.
Imagine a widescreen iPod that has a 4-inch display that can do a full 480p resolution with coverflow and can also store dozens of movies along with thousands of songs.
And all for $299.
I want one right now!
no gps. msg
I think GPS would be great.
GPS makes no sense. I could see a special car version, but not the typical handheld version.

A wide touch screen video iPod sounds like a big ass winner to me. A video screen that both fits in your pocket and is easy on the eyes to watch.
Now all you need is Vidcasts (basically the same as a podcast but with video). Think youtube, but on a H.264 file format.
Awesome.
And it will be called iZune.
Welcome to the social.
Give me (GPS and) Skype — that’s all I want:-)
No Sh!t…
“And in other news, Analysts expect the new touch-screen iPod to be white, with a circular virtual click wheel, and have the ability to play songs”
Morons.
No way it will have GPS. Too complicated. Jobs is all about the SIMPLE.
iPhone MAYBE, definitely not the iPod.
When will the iPod support Flash, so we can download youtube vids?
It’s coming….
Quit teasing! We’ve wanted a wide screen ipod since the Photo ipod! Zune failed at it, heck, we’re even willing to buy the darn Cingular one and not ctivate the phone part just to have one!
GPS makes all the sense in the world…. Imagine..wide screen ipod…couple of touches and you have google mpas/google earth showing you where exactly you are and could give you directions..etc.. etc… these maps could easily be pre loaded when you synch your ipod to your Mac…i for one think that would be a great add on to the iPod’s features
If they included GPS, can you imagine the sales potential to all those folks who are buying those little $500 hand held GPS units? Through in a simple way to interface with a car stero and holly crap… that would be unstoppable. My gut reaction is, GPS is too darn good to be true and a bit too of the media focus, and wont make it…
They would never create something so good it would compete with its own iPhone…On the other hand, if they decided to throw an 80 gig hd with 1gig of flash for the OS, inside the iPhone with GPS…Im down…
While I would LOVE to have GPS navication on my iPhone, Apple has already announced that GPS would NOT be on the iPhone, so I doubt it would be on the iPod.
Too bad. A $500 GPS linked to Google? Apple couldn’t make enough.
GPS in 2008 – not this year.
Hard drives will continue in the full-sized iPod at least through 2008.
I am in the market for a GPS nav device, now I’m going to hold off and see if Apple will have one….
Sigh
The next version of the iPod will not be flash based but have 60 or 80 gb and 100 gb capacities. It will not have GPS. It will have wifi and I have a feeling it may even allow music purchases with iTunes to be conducted through the iPod.
I like being an analyst. It’s easy!
What ever it is! I want one!
GPS? On an iPod? Sheesh.
That’s something some also-ran MP3 player company would do in a desperate attempt to cram as many mindless features into their product just to make it look advanced. Apple doesn’t do that.
Why would I buy this when the Zune already contains these cutting edge features?
As they say in Italy, “Bologna!”
Unsquirted – Why would I buy this when the Zune already contains these cutting edge features?
LOL! I spit soup out of nose!
Too funny! Thanks for the roll.
GPS would be fantastic on an iPod. Even better on the phone, but it’s got to include detailed maps and the ability to download more. I’ve always wanted GPS, but never wanted to buy a device that only does GPS and nothing more. Put it on the iPhone, and I’ll be standing in line for one.
You’re welcome, Schmutzz! I was inspired by UH OH, Zune Tang and Former Mac User – three shining, happy examples of the future with MS and Windows.
