Al Gore’s Apple Keynote-based doc ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ snags two Oscar nominations

“Who says politics is show business for ugly people? ‘An Inconvenient Truth,’ Al Gore’s film on the perils of global warming, scored two Oscar nominations Tuesday for best documentary feature and best original song,” Beth Fouhy reports for The Associated Press.

Fouhy reports, “While he is not technically a nominee _ the film’s director, David Guggenheim, won the nod, as did singer Melissa Etheridge for the song ‘I Need to Wake Up’ – Gore said he was ‘thrilled’ that his movie was honored.”

“Gore narrowly lost the 2000 presidential contest to Republican George W. Bush in a disputed election. He has said he’s not planning to run for president again but also has not ruled it out,” Fouhy reports.

MacDailyNews Note: Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the highest-grossing documentary of 2006, features copious use of Apple’s Keynote presentation software, even though many reviewers of the film continue to incorrectly describe it as a “PowerPoint” presentation. Gore joined Apple’s Board of Directors on March 19, 2003.

  1. Speaking of Macs in movies. Has anyone seen how much exposure Mac and, specifically OS X got in the movie, The Devil Wears Prada? I was AMAZED that the Mac was shown in nearly EVERY scene, and many times, we were shown the screen and several “actions” (like the “Genie” effect when minimizing windows).

Wish we had MORe of that exposure. Good movie, mostly. Always love Meryl Streep.

  2. Let the fur fly:

A major research institution has just announced the discovery of the densest element yet known to science. The new element has been named “Bushcronium.” Bushcronium has one neutron, 12 assistant neutrons, 75 deputy neutrons, and 224 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 311. These particles are held together by dark forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons. The symbol for Bushcronium is “W”. Bushcronium’s mass actually increases over time, as morons randomly interact with various elements in the atmosphere and become assistant deputy neutrons in a Bushcronium molecule, forming isodopes. This characteristic of moron-promotion leads some scientists to believe that Bushcronium is formed whenever morons reach a certain quantity or concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as “Critical Morass”. When catalyzed with money, Bushcronium activates Foxnewsium, an element that radiates orders of magnitude more energy, albeit as incoherent noise, since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

  3. I’ll grant that “Global Warming” is more of an industry than a science, but you whack jobs on the far right are no better than those on the left.

Whatever happened to simply not spewing filth into the air we breathe? Or the water we drink?

  4. Water vapor is also a Greenhouse gas. It is 100 times more prevalent in the Earth’s atmosphere than Carbon Dioxide.

Do you really think doubling or tripling our carbon dioxide output will have any bearing on the greenhouse effect? Do you really think it will change the climate world wide?

The Earth’s tropical rain forests are being cut down for farming and fuel due to population pressures. In 60 years they will all be grass lands. In 100 years they will all be deserts. Turning humid rain forests into arid desserts will change climate on a global scale.

The same thing happened in North Africa 4000 to 6000 years ago. The Sahara region was changed from savannah and rain forests to dessert. It took 2000 years, not 120 or so and it was regional but it did change the local climate drastically.

What is happening today is worldwide. That’s the real cause of climate change. The only real way to stop it is to relieve the population pressures.

Let’s see the green politicians grab that hand grenade. They all know the real causes but they would rather BS about carbon dioxide emissions and blame the developed nations for climate change than tell third world countries to practice birth control.

  5. What if the NeoCons are wrong and GLobal Warming IS the result of human activity? Well the largest cleansing of human life ever is quite possible

What if Al Gore and his cronies are wrong about human activities causing Global warming? Well the profit margins of some companies would suffer, and people will have changed their transportation habits, etc. for nothing.

Hmmm. I think the most logical answer to this conundrum is to play it safe, and go with Al Gore’s data. But you know those crazy Neo Cons – they like to gamble with not just their own lives, but the lives of everyone else in the world.

  6. One of the MANY problems with liberals is that anyone to the right of them is always somehow to the “far right”. Anyone not a liberal is an “extreme right winger”. Liberals preach tolerance and practice intolerance. And they act like anyone that doesn’t believe that human beings are destoying the planet is somehow FOR pollution. Yeah right, non-liberals actually WANT dirty air and dirty water. This is one of the MANY reasons that non-liberals don’t take liberals seriously. They tend to be intellectual fascists.

  7. Acceptance or not of Gore’s diatribe falls right down party lines. Science is never that way! Use of the word “truth” in the title should be an immediate warning that it doesn’t exist anywhere in the film. He abuses the word “truth” as attempt to self-justify the position he takes in the film. Look at George Orwell’s book, “1984” and the government’s “Department of Truth”. Furthermore, Al Gore has zero credentials as an environmental scientist. He has a bachelors degree in government and nothing more.

If the situation were to arise that Al Gore were to declare himself as a master brain surgeon, it wouldn’t surprise me if liberals across the United States would line up to get a fontal lobatomy from him. Liberals have already demonstrated the same blind devoted worship to that false prophet.

  8. While my name is Frank, I am not the same Frank as said “Global Warming is just like the Oscars…bunch of CRAP.”

That Frank is an idiot and is himself full of CRAP.

The climate crisis is real. The evidence is clear and there is not a hanging chad to be see.

Pity America can’t run an honest election process. Perhaps the Declaraton of Independance should be revoked.

AACKKKK!! Did I say that? I’m sorry!!! Please don’t set Homeland Security after me!! I’m not a terrerisss!

  9. Go to the UN web site and dig and dig for the numbers and the formulas used to come to their conclusions for the Kyoto treaty. It’s all contrived and twisted to impede industrialized countries and let developing countries develop wealth at the expense of the health of their populations. Wasn’t that about the time Al and Bill accepted the suitcase full of money from the Chinese for the DNC ?

I actually believed that humans contributed to global warming until I sifted through that report. Somewhere in there is the Stockholm report that contradicts the Kyoto report and says that water vapor has more to do with greenhouse effect and that it the treaty was adopted it wouldn’t have any impact on global warming.

  10. It doesn’t take a me to know that Global warming has been proven by vast amounts of data. But the blind who choose not to see are never going to see the truth if it hurts their precious religion – right win pure capitalism without restraint.

  11. Closely related to the debate on global warming is the issue of oil depletion. Matthew Simmons, an international engergy broker, is about as conservative as they get. He too is warning of issues of sustainability with our current oil-dependent lifestyle and economy.

There is middle ground. OK, maybe all our auto-centrick sprawl is not causing global warming but why not look at creating traditional neighborhoods where walking, biking or transit are viable alternatives to driving? A good many conservative developers are making some serious cash by selling the concept of “place” — with greater density (read more profit per acre) and more small scale retail choices (read more business opportunities for more people). We can treat the earth better while making money and all living happier lives.

  12. Mark,

Have you ever noticed that the more pro-capitalist and pro-Christian a movie is … the more LOUSY and UNWATCHABLE it is?

    Hehe .. let’s give Kirk Cameron a director’s chair doing some pro-Christian “Bibleman” movie and we’ll see how it stands up to Clint Eastwood’s work ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
