Report: Apple to announce iTunes Store deal with The Beatles via Super Bowl commercial

“The worldwide Beatles grapevine is buzzing over the distinct possibility that the long-awaited remastering of the Fab Four’s United Kingdom CD back catalogue will finally see the light of day — by June,” Terry Ott reports for The Toronto Sun.

“As per usual, Apple/EMI is presently mum, but sources with knowledge of the project say that two scenarios are possible for the release of the minimum 11 UK albums,” Ott reports.

Ott reports, “What’s more, the long, heated court feud between the Beatles’ Apple Corp. and Apple Computers [sic] over naming rights might finally have been resolved. The belief is that Beatles songs at long last will be available for downloading from Apple Computers’ iTunes, as soon as next month.”

“The buzz is that two companies apparently will finally collaborate on Beatles music — for an exclusive three-month, restricted deal allowing Apple Computers’ popular iTunes to offer downloaded, remastered Beatles songs, perhaps even before the CDs are made available,” Ott reports.

“Apple Computersplans a ‘special’ announcement scheduled for a Super Bowl commercial on Feb. 4, which may give more indication as to where the new remastered CDs will debut first,” Ott reports.

  1. Damn… another set of great SuperBowl commercials missed live.

In Canada, Big Brother Government forces cable providers to replace U.S. signals with Canadian TV stations when shows are simulcast.

(Supposedly it’s to support Canadian advertisers but the fear of many past Liberal governments was Canadians would be “Americanized” when flooded by U.S. culture.)

We get to see the Canadian commercials and miss the often award winning classics.

Hope the Beatles/Apple rumour pans out as it will be another round of positive Apple spin & PR.

  2. The Beatles glorified drug use. They ruined Rock and Roll.

Right you are, RK. And letting your hair grow proves you’ve sold your soul to the Devil, and alien invaders are sneaking up on the White House to kidnap the President at this very moment. If your brain gets fried from taking too many drugs, at least you can blame the drugs. What’s your excuse?

  3. Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2007 first quarter ended December 30, 2006. The Company posted record revenue of $7.1 billion and record net quarterly profit of $1.0 billion, or $1.14 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $5.7 billion and net quarterly profit of $565 million, or $.65 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 31.2 percent, up from 27.2 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 42 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple shipped 1,606,000 Macintosh® computers and 21,066,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 28 percent growth in Macs and 50 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“We are incredibly pleased to report record quarterly revenue of over $7 billion and record earnings of $1 billion,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’ve just kicked off what is going to be a very strong new product year for Apple by launching Apple TV and the revolutionary iPhone.”

“We generated over $1.75 billion in cash during the quarter to end with $11.9 billion,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the second fiscal quarter of 2007, we expect revenue of $4.8 to $4.9 billion and earnings per diluted share of $.54 to $.56.”

  4. …how’s about announcing a mac product or two at MACWORLD for cryin’ out loud! sheessh

Steve and Apple have given us so many wonderful products that I think he’s earned the right to expect us, the Mac faithful, to give him the space to focus on any project that is exciting to him, and to trust that all the other stuff will also keep flowing from the mind of Steve and Apple.

There will be plenty of time in the coming months for the special announcements and new releases we know and love. MacWorld belonged to Steve and the iPhone. To me, it was perfect.

  5. Sorry but no way will this happen. I think The Beatles need to come down off their “high horses” and stop thinking their music, however great it was, is somehow divine in nature. Yes their music was and is fantastic. But common, knock it off! It is getting old. I could care less if their music is ever on iTunes. Maybe because I have all their stuff on CDs anyway.

  6. Forget a mere commercial break (well maybe do a few teasers).

Steve needs to take over the half-time show and make the announcement. Imagine, one big Apple infomerical…

I’ll gladly watch a Stevenote over the usual mid-game freak show.
