“Apple is running a seasonal screen saver on Macs situated in its retail stores which depicts a snowstorm – and it’s available as a free download,” Macworld UK reports.
“The screen saver – Snowfall – is a Quartz Composer-made set of visuals for the Mac, and it’s available now for download. It features a range of snowflake images taken by Wilson Bentley,” Macworld UK reports.

Finally! I’ve been looking for this everywhere!
This has been around for a while
Yup. I’ve been using a similar one called Snowsaver.saver for years, and it works on 10.1 up (running fine on Tiger right now). The guy built it in OpenGL himself after seeing something like it on a computer at an Apple Store and being told that it was just a QuickTime movie, not an actual screensaver. VersionTracker’s got it here.
More on the new Snowfall screensaver–it’s a bit jumpy on a 24-inch iMac with a 2 GHz PowerPC processor and a few programs open. SnowSaver runs a lot smoother, and I prefer its simpler animation to that of Snowfall.
My wife was simply impressed by the iTunes album art screen saver I have running. “No, sweety I didn’t spend any money on that, it’s built into the operatings system.”
Maybe I’m the only one but…I don’t seem to have a “Screensavers” folder in my library on my system. I am running 10.4.8.
I even tried creating my own “Screensavers” folder in the library folder and moved the “Snowfall.qtz” over and then went to System Preferences and it was greyed out…
Any suggestions?
@EvangelizeWithRespect:
How can you have a 24-inch iMac with a PowerPC G5?
MW: “can”?
Oops. It’s only a 20-inch screen. (It just feels like a 24-inch compared to the classic iMacs I have at home.)
MW over, and in I should think over my posts before I hit the submit button.
Go to Macintosh HD>Library>Screen Savers
It works.
Very cool indeed! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> Runs nice on my Mac Pro…
It’s jumpy on a dual monitor setup, smooth when I turn off the external monitor. (In its preferences.) And it’s a Quartz Composer file. They can work as screensavers, apparantly.
Launch96,
Make sure you are looking in the root Library folder and not the Library folder within your System folder. Don’t ever F–k with the System folder!
Its smooth on my dual monitor setup but it is only capable of running on one monitor.
That shor is purdy.
Doesn’t work on my G3 B&W PowerMac. Must require a better GPU. 🙁
It’s really neat looking- never saw it in an Apple Store, but cool nonetheless.
Speaking of snow screensavers, did you ever fart so hard while shoveling snow that you ended up in another zip code?
