Prudential: Apple ‘iPhone’ to sport iPod click wheel; video iPod by Q2

“Apple Computer’s much anticipated iPod cell phone will look like an iPod with a small screen and a click-wheel interface, according to one Wall Street analyst,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.

“In an extensive research note released to clients earlier this week, Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora said the first and slimmer of Apple’s initial two cell phone models will look like an iPod with a small screen and a click wheel interface,” Lane reports. “‘Apple has mentioned several times that music experience is its top priority and that it would not do anything to comprise that,’ the analyst wrote. ‘We believe that the music phone will be true to these statements and should be considered a music player that has phone capabilities rather than a phone with a built-in music player.'”

Lane reports, “Tortora said the iPhone device, which he calls a “slim music phone,” will pack camera functionality and be GSM/GPRS network compatible. Meanwhile, he said Apple is also working on a smart phone device with a larger OLED-based display and a sliding keyboard that will be WCDMA compatible to allow for higher bandwidth… Tortora also told clients he expects volume production of a widescreen iPod to begin in the first quarter of 2007 with availability shortly thereafter.”

  1. you tell the Jesse

you the smartest analyst in all of Wall Street

tell them about the iPhone and iTV and . . .

    Jesse? is that you?

or did that Neo guy from the Next Wave of the internet go
    work for Prudential?

    Neo?

    It’s you. Right? Jesse?

    Neo?

    Come on guy.

I am getting all confused here.

    It’s actually scary Jesse.

    Quit doing this.

    Jesse?

  2. How do you simply dial a number (not already programmed in your phone) with just a click wheel interface???
similar to the way you can lock your ipods screen. think of the click wheel as a means to navigate 0-9. also, i believe the device, at first will be a music device that you can make calls with…not the new ROKR

  3. I believe the click wheel will have the numbers like the “disc dialing” on old pulse rotatory phones wheels. But instead of rotating the wheel, you will simply touch the number position on the wheel to dial a number. Remember that the click wheel on the ipod can detect any position of the finger touching the wheel.

  4. Viktor,

that’s not a bad idea; and then, with a simple command, you could change the digits to letters, because a phone without SMS functionality wouldn’t sell of course.

Whatever, if it has dialling keys on the outside like most other phones, then it’ll be an extremely hard job for even the best designers ( ‘morning Jonathan! ) to make it look attractive or cool.

  5. Well, as long as everyone else is doing it:

~the iPhone will sport the Apple logo on it somewhere

~it will probably allow users to “call” other people

~it will signal the user somehow when there’s a “call” for them

~its battery will be recharged by a tiny Tesla coil that has only to come within three feet of an outlet to work, but also makes your hair stand on end during recharging

  6. And it makes ice cream! And comes with sprinkles, an can make funny fart-like noises. It’s the bestest phone ever! Every valley girl will have it, and it’ll have a ring tone with Paris Hilton saying “That’s hot.”

Every business executive will have one in his purse when he’s out in the evening with the boys, all dressed up like show girls and while meeting that special guy he’s going to give the Crying game suprise to.

    Bozo

    S.

  7. “~its battery will be recharged by a tiny Tesla coil that has only to come within three feet of an outlet to work, but also makes your hair stand on end during recharging”

How about a tiny battery charger that works every time you move the phone? Like those torches you have to shake to charge the battery.

Then Apple could claim a bizilion hours battery life! No-one will be able to match that.
