“It’s been a whirlwind year for chip maker PortalPlayer. The San Jose, California-based company has seen upbeat media coverage of its role in developing wireless-connection processors for portable media players, followed by plunging share prices when it lost its deal with Apple—which once made up 95 percent of PortalPlayer’s business. Now, the company could end the year the way it began—on top of the iPod world,” Red Herring reports.
“Friedman, Billings Ramsey & Co. analyst Chris Caso said in a recent research note that PortalPlayer chips could make their way into future video iPods and iPhones. PortalPlayer’s $357 million acquisition by Nvidia Corp “gives it an inside track at providing an integrated applications/video processor in a future video iPod for 2008,” Mr. Caso said in the note, according to industry publication Electronics Supply & Manufacturing,” Red Herring reports.
Red Herring reports, “That means that the company’s processors could power an iPod phone that FBR says will be announced in the first quarter of 2007, the analyst said.”
