Man lost in deep Oregon woods rescued thanks to his Apple iPod nano’s glow

“A lost mushroom picker was spotted and rescued after search teams saw the glow of his iPod early Friday morning,” The Corvallis Gazette-Times (Oregon) reports.

“Cold, tired and complaining of aching feet, 25-year-old Pini Nou of Vancouver, Wash., was spotted by a member of a Benton County Search and Rescue unit in the deep woods of southwestern Benton County at 1:12 a.m., according to acting Benton County Emergency Management Coordinator Peggy Peirson. Nou was lost in the Dawson Creek and Oliver Creek roads area,” The Gazette-Times reports.

“The underbrush was so thick, it took the searchers a full 22 minutes to reach Nou, who, lacking a flashlight, had been trying to use the faint glow of his iPod Nano display as a light source. It took several more hours to get him safely out of the woods, and searchers didn’t get back home until around 6 a.m.,” The Gazette-Times reports.

  1. “brilliance (figuratively and literally) of using an iPod to be saved”

Sounds more like he was trying to use it as a flashlight rather than a signalling device, and they just happened to spot that first.

“Case 1: “iPod Saves!”. Case 2: “iPod exposes fatal genetic flaw”.”

Still one more dumb-ass alive because of an iPod. That’s hardly positive. As somebody said already, Darwin Thwarted.

The next thing you know Apple will be selling Macs to terrorist cable news channels.

  2. Okay…

I’m not saying that the guy wasn’t a moron. All I meant was that this positive press for the iPod can counter some of the negative press.

See the difference? It’s a point for the iPod, not the moron behind it. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

See I didn’t read it that way. I read it as, if you’re going to have a small handheld device when lost in the woods, make sure it’s not just a music player but that it’s something that’s also got mapping software. And take a flashlight.

Seems like his most useful handheld device was the cellphone with which he used to summon help.
