Man lost in deep Oregon woods rescued thanks to his Apple iPod nano’s glow

“A lost mushroom picker was spotted and rescued after search teams saw the glow of his iPod early Friday morning,” The Corvallis Gazette-Times (Oregon) reports.

“Cold, tired and complaining of aching feet, 25-year-old Pini Nou of Vancouver, Wash., was spotted by a member of a Benton County Search and Rescue unit in the deep woods of southwestern Benton County at 1:12 a.m., according to acting Benton County Emergency Management Coordinator Peggy Peirson. Nou was lost in the Dawson Creek and Oliver Creek roads area,” The Gazette-Times reports.

“The underbrush was so thick, it took the searchers a full 22 minutes to reach Nou, who, lacking a flashlight, had been trying to use the faint glow of his iPod Nano display as a light source. It took several more hours to get him safely out of the woods, and searchers didn’t get back home until around 6 a.m.,” The Gazette-Times reports.

  1. One late evening I went to rescue a pal from the RR station. My wife took the car one way while I walked the other. I found him, struggling with his gear, and we started home. Then I saw my wife, in our car, ahead of us – looking both ways at an intersection. Took out my iPod, activated the screen, and waved at her. She came our way but denied having seen my wave. Blind old woman!

  2. Stupidity: it’s not the getting lost that wasn’t stupid, it was the brilliance (figuratively and literally) of using an iPod to be saved being used as a counterpoint to “iPod stupidity”.

… as in being too stupid to pay attention to your surroundings because you’re too busy whizzing through playlists to notice the bus you just stepped out in front of. Case 1: “iPod Saves!”. Case 2: “iPod exposes fatal genetic flaw”.
