Forbes: Microsoft’s Zune stinks; like ‘Microsoft Bob,’ only more embarrassing

“You might have heard of the Zune, Microsoft’s supposed ‘iPod killer.’ The portable media player boasts a larger screen than the iPod, a built-in FM radio, and the ability to share songs wirelessly with other users. It’s set to hit stores on Tuesday, and some gadget geeks are getting excited. But it appears they will be sorely disappointed,” David M. Ewalt blogs for Forbes. (Ewalt joined Forbes in 2004 and covers a wide variety of topics, with an emphasis on technology. Ewalt previously served as an editor at InformationWeek, where he won a number of awards for his coverage of the technology industry.)

“Zune’s highly touted wireless… sharing feature has been crippled to the point of uselessness. If you get a song from a friend you can only listen to it three times, over a period of three days, before it expires. You can’t send it to a third friend. And you can’t wirelessly connect to your PC or an Internet hot spot,” Ewalt writes.

Ewalt writes, “The new Zune Marketplace is even stupider… It has fewer songs. No audiobooks or podcasts. It doesn’t sell movies or TV shows. And if you actually want to buy a song, you’ve got to lay out big chunks of cash and jump through more hoops than a circus lion.”

“There’s plenty more to complain about. Microsoft’s copy protection schemes are too restrictive. The Zune is about 60% bigger and 17% heavier than a iPod. It comes in brown. All considered, we could be looking at the biggest consumer electronics flop in recent history here. This is like ‘Microsoft Bob,’ only more embarrassing,” Ewalt writes.

  1. wow! I hope this guy never decides to write a bad review re: Apple. I hate it when critics write with hyperbole like this …..’you’ve got to lay out big chunks of cash and jump through more hoops than a circus lion’.

I’d rather a reviewer just state the facts…..and in a case like this the facts can clearly speak for themselves.

I’m not saying he’s wrong but if someone were using language like this when writing a poor review on an Apple product it would really piss me off. WHY !!??? WHY ? Because it’s done all the mtherf*kin time by peole like Enderle, Dvorak, etc.

  2. If the hyperbole is based on facts, how is it a bad thing? There’s a difference between people creatively characterizing a user-unfriendly experience, and people tossing out words that are nothing more than fancy untruths. You do realize that you sound like some kind of anti-creative cretin, right? Stop it. Just stop it now.

  3. Actually, what’s even more fun is the Microsoft Fanboy Squad that came out to slam his review in the comments. Great entertainment.

I didn’t even know there WERE Microsoft Fanboys. I mean, PC users, sure. But actual MS fanboys! hehehe.
