USA Today article about network TV shows online nearly forgets about Apple

“Prime time is becoming anytime as TV breaks out of its box,” Bill Keveney and Janet Kornblum report for USA Today.

“This fall, episodes of many series, including the biggest hits and newest shows, are available online for free as networks try to hold on to audiences while finding new business in new technologies,” Keveney and Kornblum report.

“The current efforts are largely experimental, although many have found strong advertiser interest. Since last year, viewers have been able to pay to download and own commercial-free episodes of such shows as NBC’s The Office via iTunes and other websites,” Keveney and Kornblum report.

Keveney and Kornblum report, “In most cases, episodes are streamed starting the day after broadcast to give fans a chance to catch up on missed episodes and to attract new viewers… Many of the innovations are of the trial-and-error sort, but Jeffrey Cole, director of the University of Southern California’s Center for the Digital Future, says TV may avoid falling behind as the music and movie worlds did.”

Keveney and Kornblum report, “Jupiter Research analyst Todd Chanko expects computer viewing to grow, but only so much; it can’t replace a TV’s bigger picture and the chance to lean back and relax on the couch. ‘A PC is not designed for the viewing of television.'”

An entire article focused on what network TV is doing online that barely mentions Apple’s iTunes Store (far and away the leader in bringing and selling TV shows online) along with a quote from an analyst who seems to have completely missed Steve Jobs’ “iTV” sneak peek is laughable, but also about par for the USA Today course. “A PC is not designed for the viewing of television.” Yeah, if you’re talking about a Windows PC, that’s for sure.

Steve Jobs gives sneak peek of Apple’s “iTV” wireless set-top box:

  1. from the article

“The current efforts are largely experimental, although many have found strong advertiser interest. Since last year, viewers have been able to pay to download and own commercial-free episodes of such shows as NBC’s The Office via iTunes and other websites.”

    Apple-less indeed

  2. I think MDN is correct with their “Take.” USA today frequently ignores or diminishes Apple tech, but they routinely cream themselves over Microsoft products and services.

    Laughable:
Jupiter Research analyst Todd Chanko expects computer viewing to grow, but only so much; it can’t replace a TV’s bigger picture and the chance to lean back and relax on the couch. ‘A PC is not designed for the viewing of television.’

    Laughable…but true, hence the iTV.
