Apple will define the future of the consumer technology industry

“An anonymous investor submits [to SeekingAlpha.com]: Apple (AAPL) is on a path to become the Sony (SNE) of the Digital World. The key difference is Sony could never string together their different businesses to feed one another and Apple is making that their operating model. Let’s examine the pieces Apple has:

1. Hardware: Mac and iPod
2. Software: Undoubtedly Apple’s OS and software are miles ahead compared to the Window’s franchise…specially in terms of reliability and usability. And now with the ability to run Windows they are a phenomenal solution for consumers.
3. Content services: With iTunes and Jobs’ ability to negotiate with Hollywood and the music industry, Apple will soon become the largest distributor/re-seller/retailer of content in the world. It’s just a matter of time.

The anonymous investor writes, “So for the dudes stuck on the ‘my micro-processor is better than yours’ argument, welcome to a place where hardware is a commodity, content & services are king and Apple defines the future of the consumer technology industry. And will they dump Intel. Nope – not any time soon = the next 10 years. Because Intel is bending so far backward for Apple they can kiss their own ass. And Steve has an ego… and that ego means he doesn’t give a damn if AMD offers him cheaper prices like Dell does. Because Intel probably has a thousand engineers helping him customize their products for his super cool machines.”

  1. Good article. I feel like Intel really is working hard with Apple in a way they can’t/ don’t with PC makers. It’s probably because of Apple’s control of the “whoe widget.”

MW: Apple Computer. Taking back what is rightfully theirs.

  2. Like I said yesterday on one of my posts, Apple wants to be the ultimate distribute/seller of content. They don’t want to make it or produce it, just sell it. I see a true on-demand world coming very quickly (ie. next 2 years). You will be able to watch any movie or TV show or listen to any piece of music instantly (or damn near close to it). Pricing is the major issue to be worked out.

  3. Spot on, old chap.

There was one line that I’m sure caused a bit of grief amongst the “Fight the power” crowd that adorns many a Mac sight.

“They will become the Walmart (WMT) of digital music & movies”

    Remember Apple, success=envy=hate

  4. TowerTone…

Success leads to envy. Envy leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering. The path to the Dark Side this is.

I think perhaps a few people are crowning Apple a little early. Let’s have a few more quarters of phenomenal growth first. Or at least wait until after Macworld ’07.

  5. Unlike windows fans, Apple fans would never stay quiet if apple starts making crap products. We might be zealots but we are not stupid. We however trust Apple will try to be the best in what they undertake.

Thanks Apple, for the whole widget.

MDN word “human” as in Apple makes products for the ordinary human being.

  6. 1. Hardware: Mac and iPod

Not everything in the world of electronics.

    2. Software: Undoubtedly Apple’s OS and software are miles ahead compared to the Window’s franchise…specially in terms of reliability and usability. And now with the ability to run Windows they are a phenomenal solution for consumers.

Apple’s software is miles ahead in what limited choices they offer.

You need quantity as well as quality.

    3. Content services: With iTunes and Jobs’ ability to negotiate with Hollywood and the music industry, Apple will soon become the largest distributor/re-seller/retailer of content in the world. It’s just a matter of time.

Not if Walmart has anything to say about it. The numerous poor and computer clueless still make up the majority of the world population.

  7. Not so sure about this. Well argued an’ all, but … This would mean Apple seriously changing course. As many of us Apple afficionados like to point out, Apple is first and foremost a hardware company. Selling services as your major business is something entirely different. Also, if this guy would be spot on I would have expected iTMS to be a major revenue generator, and that it ain’t.

I also have a serious problem with Steve Jobs CEO-ing it over anything wal-mart. “The problem with Microsoft is that they have no taste, no taste at all.” Would he be the ultimate commoditizer? Use his hardware just to sell other peoples product? I do really have a problem with this. Being a service provider is so not “the whole widget”. It’s a bit like BMW going into busses and trains just to be able to haul more people. Or B&O turning into a chain of commercial radio stations. I just don’t see it happening.

My hunch would be more along the lines of being a great enabler of all these services and selling gorgeous hardware to run them on, just like today. I see nothing today or in the forseeable future that contradicts this.

  8. iTv for those that just bought a new TV.

iTV built into a 30″ monitor is a REAL iTV. An intelligent WiFi television where Apple/iTunes provides all of the content downloaded in realtime and stored (not rented) safely on a hard drive via Time Machine. One device, very easy to use interface (easier than a DVD player), no wires.

If you apply Apple’s creativity and style, with the speed, power and stability of Mac OS, you have an infinite variety of consumer data and entertainment products.

    Don’t people dream any more?
Have we become couch slugs, whining about how we are not being served fast enough?

I think America started to die when people stayed indoors with their TV, and homes no longer had porches. The value of friendship and neighbors was replaced with ego-centrism. Sad. The beginning of the end. Creating more ways and reasons to stay confined creates paranoia personalities. No? Look at the news. They make their money from creating FUD although it has absolutely nothing to do with you. The whole country is paranoid. The terrorists have truly won! My little town of 1200 people was given $15,000 for terror/riot equipment.

We are addicted to computers and TV, and the media knows how to use that addiction against us. Don’t you ever wonder why 2000 people dying in a building 5 years ago affects you more than 1,000,000 people dying EACH YEAR from mass genocide, disease and starvation in Africa? It’s the media hype. Buildings collapsing is more dramatic than watching a 5 year old boy slowly starve to death. You were TOLD what to care about, and you mindlessly do. You care more about watching a kids game being played by millionaires (American football) than that 5 year old.

    What have we become?

What will we be in 20 years?

    [ Ha! MDN BANNED “M di L B Simoni” from posting! ]

  9. Yep – I’ve been banned, too, many times!

“Name Reserved” error while trying to post.

Kinda stupid being that I just come one here and use a different name.

This usually happens when you offend MDN.

Remember, it’s a strict dictatorship here. The only “free speech” is what gets approved… the things that create hits on the site. Give advice for improvement and you’ll be banned.

  10. I’ve been banned for claiming MDN makes up fake users to post his own comments, a childish way to create controversy and more site traffic.

He is bright. A site that he just needs to copy and paste from other people’s intelligently written articles, make a bunch of fkae comments to feign real traffic and you have a site that make money from advertising when there really isnt as much real traffic or content. BRILLIANT!

  11. MDN is as much a dictatorship as your own blog is, you whining idiot! It’s their site, and they run it however they choose. So the question is not about censorship (hello, only the government can forbid publication); it’s about what they want to do with their site. If you poop in someone else’s backyard enough times, eventually they don’t let you come over any more. It’s the same thing here. It’s really not hard to understand.

What is hard to understand is why people think any private entity has any responsibility to give them a platform to say stuff. Wal-Mart has no such responsibility; MDN has no such responsibility; neither does my blog, nor does yours. Free speech means you have the right to speak. It doesn’t mean that you get a free platform on every porch you want just because you have a mouth. It means you can talk all day on your own porch. Everyone else’s porch depends on that person and what they want to do. Get it?

  12. MDN – Please send refunds to all the people who have been banned. They deserve all the money they paid to be entertained by your site back.

And please stop “copy(ing) and past(ing) from other people’s … articles”, thus providing a roundup of the day’s Mac-related events. After all, this is supposed to be a news site.
