“Apple Computer in a few weeks is expected to bring its AirPort Extreme base station and iSight video-cam products up to compliance with an environmental directive that has for the last three months barred their sale overseas,” Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider.
“According to Apple’s online store, the company will resume shipments of the iSight in ‘October.’ Meanwhile, its AirPort Extreme base station will begin shipping to customers in about ‘3-5 weeks,'” Lane reports.

Hopefully this will put to rest the silly notion that the iSight cam will be built into the cinema display line.. People don’t realize that cinema displays are mostly purchased by pros (PowerMac and MacPro users,) and that most pros use multiple displays on their desktop.. Having the iSight cam built into more than one display at a pro workstation would be dumb… For this reason alone, the iSight cam will remain a seperate device for pro users.
Airport Express and iSight are overdue for an update. I hope its more than simply bringing them up to code.
Does anyone know how to adjust the brigtness setting for the isight in i-chat? Has Apple posted any firmware updates for this? Any links?
I wonder if the new Airport Extreme Base Stations will support Wireless-N technology for the upcoming iTV… if Apple is really going to use N to stream to iTV, they’d need either a new Airport Extreme card, or a Base Station. (Stream movies/TV to the Base Station over Gigabit Ethernet from your Mac, then wirelessly to the iTV).
Or not… who knows?
It wouldn’t be the first time Apple had a minor upgrade just before a major one, I think.

RC, just because Apple’s updating iSight for stand-alone purchases doesn’t mean it won’t also be built in to displays. I don’t know whether that will happen or not, but I certainly hope that it will. Even pros use cameras once in a while and they should be selectable or ablt to be turned off if running multiple displays. I’m actually delaying getting a new display, in part, hoping that the new ones will have a built-in camera.
I’m with HG Wells! Not literally, but you know what I mean. Roll on revamped Cinema Displays! I’m waiting on buying a revamped 30incher.

This can be done right now. If I network with one of my other macs, I can mount any external HDs, CDs, DVDs, and even disk images that the other computer has.
All you need to do is connect as an administrator.

Why is that silly? Even pros use the video chat feature. I am an editor, and I use it to discuss projects with other collaborators. Besides, even if they built cams into the displays, the iSight would still be necessary for people with older monitors. or non-Apple monitors.

ray Lane: your method requires both computers to be on – the computer you’re using, plus the computer with the external HD attached. Allowing an external HD to be shared from an Airport Extreme/Express base station means that the HD is plugged into the basestation, the same way a printer can be now.
Of course, this is all just a rumour.

Pro’s use of video chat– Ever need to hold up something and POINT to a particular thing to get a thick headed client to understand what’s being talked about?
So just turn off the ones you don’t need. I doubt most pros have more than one display. Who needs 2 with the 30″ available? Cheaper to have one big screen. I’d like it built in! Plus if you had more than one, you could turn the second screen to show a view of the first screen to a client! If it showed a decent view that is.

Because as I said, most pros use multiple displays, that means that you’d also have multiple built-in iSight cams which is not a very smart set-up. Add to that the height of the 30″ display is too tall for an ideal iSight angle.. At least with a standalone cam you can tilt just the camera instead of the whole 30″ display to get an appropriate viewing angle. And multiple display users won’t have a wasted or non-used cam on their second monitor.
All that needs to be done is to build an IR receiver for Front Row into the displays. Apple is shipping Front Row with the next iteration of OSX so some sorty of remote capability must be added to the Pro LIne up. What better way to give a presentation that seeing your hi-res pics controlled remotely on your 30″ in ACD front of a few clients.
As for the iSights wouldn’t it just be a build to order option like bluetooth is on new macs? Perhaos even a user-fit kit would be available letting you add a small iSight module into the framework of the display through a small panel.
I intend to buy 2x 23″ HD displays whenever in the future they are upgraded or when Apple’s front row compatibility plans for the Mac Pro/Powermac G5 become apparent.
If no internal solution presents itself expect to see a far more streamlined iSight in the near future.
In the meantime all the suggestions here could be valid stop shouting each other down like children.
Hopefully we will see some sort of integration with iTV but will iSight go USB-2?
As for the AirPort express, anything that is an improvement over the current version. We have had to downgrade to an older firmware because of frequent crashes.

Setting aside whether graphics pros actually want iSights built into their monitors, RC is right about the angle. If you’ve actually sat and worked in front of a 23″ or 30″ monitor you’d know that the angle isn’t right, and can’t be made right without a lot of tilting, which a) isn’t possible given the current hinge and b) would be ridiculous (what, you’re going to sit there with the bottom of your huge 30″ monitor pushed inward?). I suppose you could do it with a tiny motor or something, inside the camera housing, but that adds expense and sacrifices reliability.
No, you can get away with it on a laptop lid, but it would be really awkward on a Cinema Display.

But what if you did have two monitors, and you were able to run one cam in iChat and the other in Yahoo messenger, and were somehow able to mashup the two video streams in Final Cut in real time, like a director. Wouldn’t that be cool? Get working on it Apple.
Actually, they could just have the iSight tilted a few degrees down to an angle that would be useful at a set distance from the monitor. Not that I care.
Apple could have an adjustable iSight in the displays.
I think it is a good idea to do this. My iSight is not the easiest thing to get to stay in one place, and I don’t want to stick it down in case I want to use it with another mac.
I wish iChat would work with people on PCs. I’ve never been able to get it to work with someone using AOL on a PC, even though everything is up to date. Get text but no audio or video.

Even though iSight cams could be added to displays, it is probably not the most practial solution 1. for viewing angle and 2. for multiple display users. If Apple has a new iSight camera in the pipeline I wouldn’t count on iSights being built in to new Cinema displays.. I know I wouldn’t want to be shifting around my 30″ just to get the optimal viewing angle when it’d be so much easier just to tilt a seperate cam… A MacBook is an entirely different story..
