More surprises coming from Apple soon?

Charles Arthur blogs for The Guardian, “Writing on the Apple announcements, Jupiter analyst Michael Gartenberg concludes that:”

At the end of the day, there’s no reason to think the iPod will lose significant market share for the next 24 months.

Arthur writes, “No argument there; you’d not want to be trying to sell any other digital music player against the new lineup of iPods. But something else Gartenberg said intrigued us:”

Also, it’s still early in terms of holiday announcements, we might yet hear another one or two things from Cupertino before the first frost hits in the East.

“Since Gartenberg had (surely) a prebriefing from Apple on the announcements, the hint – allied to Steve Jobs’s signoff on Tuesday of ‘We’ll see you all again soon’ – does leave possibilities in the air,” Arthur writes.

  1. Apple have a press event scheduled next week at Photokina most likely to announce a new version of Aperture. However this would also be a good event to announce MacBook Pro’s bumped up to Merom as they’re so heavily used by professional photographer’s. Certainly what I’m looking for. A slightly tweaked motherboard to allow for a max of 4GB of memory would also be welcome.

“I installed iTunes 7 and it has been a jy to use. Absolutely no problems on my G5 iMac.

I guess I’m one of the fortunate few.”

Count me in, iTunes 7 is a beauty, stylish and functional, by far the most sophisticated release to date. I’ve had no problems.

In fact there is an addition to the software that no one has mentioned that solves a problem that I had with the volume levels on burned CDs, Sound Check has been incorporated into burning CD’s!

I re-burned a playlist where the the sound levels were so low I could barely hear some of the tracks with the volume on 10! Now it plays comfortably at around 4. So I am very happy with iTunes 7!

  3. Mine’s a G4 Mac Mini. iTunes 7 plays songs back in a way that sounds like there’s a cushion over the speaker. When I play the same song file back through Quicktime it’s perfect. Plus iTunes 7 doesn’t work with the Roku Soundbridge any more so I’ve had to use Firefly to get around that problem. (something to do with Apple recoding bits of the software and not telling their partners). iTunes 7 looks fantastic but doesn’t sound it.

  4. I always stand back from new Apple releases because there’s always a little something wrong. The amazing thing about Apple is that they quickly get the bugs out and the end user “gets” what’s been promised, eventually.

Unlike some software companies that promise the moon, deliver an outhouse, then pathetically try to act like its a world class product they’re providing.

  5. Here’s what happened for me with iTunes 7. I installed it on my g4 machine along with quicktime 7.1.3 No plug ins whatsoever. It worked beautifully for the first few days. I also installed it on my 17 inch macbook Pro. Also no problems…

THEN…I go to show it to two PC loving friends. The screen refused to re-draw, cover flow refused to load, I could take the icon of a file and drag it over the iTunes screen and it would “reveal” the unseen screen behind it which did not appear since the screen did not properly redraw. But it would play….and sounded fine..I just couldn’t control it. Finally it stopped playing too.

Seriously… Go look at Engadget and the MacForums…There are some major bugs in this release and while some have not experienced them I assure you..they are there.
In attempting to fix it (after restarting, uninstalling, reinstalling) I threw out the various plist files recommended over on MacFixit…to no avail. I finally had to remove it completely…find the link to the old version of iTunes and reload all the music.

  6. @ BrianD: I don’t think you’re one of the fortunate few. I think the large majority of people have had no problems with iTunes 7, but it is a long-standing and known fact that the unhappy users are the most vocal. Therefore, it seems like everyone has problems.

iTunes 7 works perfectly for me too on my iBook G4 1.33 GHz. But I just CAN’T get over how ugly and out-of-touch (with Mac OS X) the GUI (graphical user interface) is. It looks almost Windows Vista-ish in spots.

    🙁

  7. Tested iTunes 7.0 extensively on G5 Dual 2.3, MacBook, Intel Mac Mini, and 20″ iMac (G5). Works perfectly. I have > 5500 lossless songs, >4000 images, and > 200 movies.

I am streaming to Mac Mini-based media center, and have 5G 60 GB iPod, and G1 Nano attached.

Have integrated music, and video into two iMovie projects.

    No problems discovered so far.

  8. iTunes 7 works fine for me on both a G4 PowerMac, and a Windows XP SP2 notebook.

Apple does do “pre-briefs”; that is, some people do get an inside look so as to provide feedback to Apple. Of course, these people are all NDAed and professionally-affiliated.

And I think Gartenberg is referring to additional stuff coming in the iPod family, not the Mac family. It could be the touchscreen at 399, or it could be more iPod accessories. My bet is still on for the 5th anniversary on Oct 23rd (altho it is a Monday).

  9. iTunes 7 is perfect for me on my 1GHz PowerMac G4 with 1.5 GB of RAM. No playback issues, no slowness, and iTunes is finally storing my subscription podcast logins! (Never worked with iTunes 6.)

Make sure you’ve upgraded to QT 7.1.3. Having plenty of RAM probably helps, too.

  10. Equalizer window – Menu -> View -> Show Equalizer

The Visualizer also seems to have been “demoted” to the menu.

iTunes 7 working fine here. It did quit unexpectedly once. My G4 is old and slow, so the album view is disabled, but that’s to be expected. I tried it on a G5 and it’s very cool (must use the same technology as Time Machine).

  11. the only problem i have experienced with itunes 7 is the party shuffle. on ver 6 i ran it showing zero upcoming tracks as there were several times when the same track would appear in the five upcoming. that worked fine and played all day. in ver 7 it stops after playing one track. it plays fine with five upcoming but again i get the problem of duplicate tracks. maybe i don’t have a large enough library (9000 ish) or maybe the smart playlist as the source for party shuffle is to blame. ideas anyone?

MW : blue (not much in the way of the blues in my collection)

  12. My Christmas wish list continues to include Apple buying Apple—-and one more thing—Apple doing something RIMM—see ya real soon–then maybe a merger with Google—Ya know I was in Compusa the other day and several strangers to Mac were drooling over the new IMAC 24 inch as was I—I was proud to be able to comfort these nervous consumers by saying “there is really nothing like a mac”—But what really sold the deal was my counsel that whenever I thought I needed help with my Mac I could go to an Apple store or I could call Apple tech support and actually talk to a human rather than a tape machine. Its a Leopard but there is no need for fear.
