RUMOR: Apple ‘iPhone’ to debut at Macworld Expo in January 2007

“Apple is working at a feverish pace to finish up its initial foray into the cellular phone market, but reliable sources report the new device will not be announced until Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 2007,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

“Apple is counting its first phone will stir the U.S. market and enjoy the same buzz that Motorola’s RAZR and LG’s Chocolate phone have. To that end, Apple will pack several high-end features into its phone, including a 3-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch display, and complete iTunes/iPod features and integration, sources with direct connections to the company’s plans report,” Katz reports.

Katz continues, “Unlike Motorola’s iTunes phones, Apple’s phone will not feature a 100 song limit. Instead, the number of music and photos that can be packed into the phone will only be limited by its storage capacity, although at present sources have been unable to confirm what that will be.”

  1. You know, I want the Apple iPhone as much as the next Mac Maniac, but somehow I don’t see it fitting well with Apple’s living room strategy.

Unless at some point in the future, they release a 7th generation iPod that happens to have a phone feature, why would they want you to buy two peripherals to keep in your pocket?

  2. Hmmm.. I may wait til January for a new phone then, mine is a piece of crap. Battery management is the worst I’ve ever had. The buttons are too sensitive.

I need a new phone. I wonder who the carrier would be? Cingular?

  3. Man, we don’t take any breaks with the rumors around here, do we? I am still exhausted from the last round. I am super excited about a genuine Apple designed cell phone. I am sure we are going to hear a bunch of complaining from the little whiners on this board, but I am sure this is going to be great!

  4. I prey that it’s Cingular because I could get an employee discount on that. But what I could easily see apple doing is have a way for it to work on both the major networks. Then anyone in the world could buy the phone.

  5. It doesn’t have to fit in with the iTV strategy. For now it is just another product where Apple can show the rest of the world that, what it chooses to do, it does better than others who have been doing it for years.

It is also a hedge against the day that people accept that MP3 players disappear after becoming as commoditized and disposable as cell phones are today.

I also think that this is another step on the way to the iSlate product that will be full OSX/phone/GPS/full screen/virtual keyboard and controls/wifi/bluetooth/hydrogen powered and generally everything you want in the paalm of your hand…

    mmmmmmm……

  6. Unless this theoretical iPhone is radically different from what is already available, Apple may be wasting energy, time and money.

Let’s face it, cell phones are commodity items at this point. Most are uninteresting, poorly designed and so crammed with useless and idiotic features, that they’re a pain to use.

I vote for: iCast, or eyeCast, or vCast. Or WalkingCast…

  7. I BADLY need an Apple phone. I’m sure many others would also welcome a phone that is NOT “uninteresting, poorly designed and so crammed with useless and idiotic features, that [it’s] a pain to use” (see Reeee, above). Combining a cell phone with iChat would be a KILLER product.

  8. What we really need is Apple to do a phone with iPod/PDA functions. I just got a Treo, and it’s great. Best phone I’ve owned (over a Razr, etc). But, it’s big. If Apple could make something as functional as the Treo, in the size of a iPod Video, or even a 3G iPod, I’d buy it.

  9. let’s discuss the only other thing that has been predicted more often than the iPhone, the end of the world. My calculations lead me to believe that January 3rd, 2007 at approximately 3:13 in the morning (give or take a few seconds, i’m not god people) will be it. Thus rendering your iPhone announcement to the realm of things never to happen!!

Everyone who wants to move to New Hampshire, eat squirrels, dance naked in the fire light and embrace the eviatable form an orderly line over here.
No need to push, ther are plenty of squirrels to go around and we are all going to die anyway..

  10. “Apple ‘iPhone’ to debut at Macworld Expo in January 2007”

…along with the “true” video iPod, the HD movie subscription service, the Apple PDA, the tablet Mac, the multi-functional handheld device, the Mac with one PCI slot and upgradeable video card, the $599 G5 cube, the “true” Leopard that runs Windows apps without Windows, and the PowerMac Cell.

It will be announced that Apple bought Sun and Adobe, then Sony bought Apple, Steve Jobs left to become CEO of Disney but dropped dead soon after from an illness kept secret by the company. He will be buried in a Jonathan Ive-designed coffin made of anodized aluminum and polycarbonate. With iSight camera in the lid.

It will later be revealed that Jobs’ will requires that every nine months he be exhumed, only to be buried again in a new coffin that is 15 percent smaller.

  11. I’d like an Apple phone because i can’t justify owning an mp3 player but i need a phone.

i think an Apple phone would be best used to capture more of the Asian market. i read somewhere that iPods aren’t a big player in parts of Asia but phones are huge.

In Japan, you can even use your phone like a mini-credit card to pay for transit tickets and more; they just charge your phone bill.

i think Apple will roll out an iphone much like they did the ipod: high end in the 1st year, then mid range the year after, then really affordable.

  12. if the world doesn’t end, then i hope Dennis right.

“It will later be revealed that Jobs’ will requires that every nine months he be exhumed, only to be buried again in a new coffin that is 15 percent smaller.” – thats funny stuff.

  13. Will Apple’s new iPhone have the codename Vista? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

This is not a “new rumor”, grok. Only a regurgitated one since the iPhone didn’t show up on Sept. 12.

No more delays Apple. Get us an iPhone, and tie it into the hardware diagram for the iTV, and make sure it has QuickTime Mobile.
