BBC online poll asks ‘Will Microsoft’s Zune be a success?’

The Beeb asks, “Will Microsoft’s Zune be a success?” in a new online poll on the BBC Technology website.

There are only two choices offered, “Yes” or “No,” leaving the perpetual 5-10% who “Don’t Know” out in the cold.

Current results with 7531 votes cast, including our newly-added “No” vote:

Yes: 35.71%
No: 64.29%

  1. WTF was Microsoft thinking with the brown? Not only is the brown just ugly, but they seem to have chosen that one for most of the PR. If they were so afraid of using black and white for the PR because of similarities to the iPod, maybe they should have selected a third color that does not literally look like shit. Nice move MS!

  2. I love how these things always say: “Results are indicative and may not reflect public opinion” what’s the point then? It just tells us which group is the most vocal and willing to vote repeatedly in order to skew the votes. Says he as he clears his cookies.

  3. The poll itself is meaningless. Simply asking for a yes or no to this question prevents an understanding of the meaning behind the question. Success can mean so many things. They don’t have to replace the iPod in order to succeed. But maybe some think that unless it gains 99% market share then it is a failure. This is such an ambiguous question that it has no value except sensationalism, which is probably its actual intent.

  4. “Everyone needs to vote otherwise the Microsoft fanboys spoil it.”

So, what you’re saying is that the poll is slanted because either MS fanboys or Apple fanboys are voting?

Let’s put it this way: I use a Mac and I think we need a good alternative to the iPod. Zune has good features, at least.

  5. Hey M.X.N.T.4.1!

No nned to clear cookies. Just close the tab, and click on the link above to reopen tab and then vota gain.

My wife is from Chicago. she told me all about “vote early, vote often.”

  6. Would have been interesting to see what people really though but now that the poll is out in the mac wild, the results will be stacked by all those voting NO because they would have voted NO regardless of what Microsoft came out with.

  7. You guys are losing sight of the significance of the poll results.

Assuming the participants represent a balanced cross section of the PMP market, then the Zune is INDEED a success. Think about it: There’re currently over half of the polled who think the Zune will be successful. Imagine half of those are iPod owners, that translates to over 25% of the iPod market. In the current PMP market climate, it doesn’t take much for the Zune to be considered a “success”. Even 5% of the iPod ecosystem is very significant for a new device.

  8. The fact that one third of the nitwits who still use Windows PC’s think Microsoft’s new “iPod killer” will be a success means nothing. Of course, there will undoubtedly be some people who just can’t resist the Zune’s gorgeous turd-brown color.
