Apple today introduced the all-new iPod nano with a new aluminum body and 24 hours of battery life and more than twice the music capacity for the same price as the previous generation. The new iPod nano features Apple’s innovative Click Wheel and an even smaller, thinner and lighter design available in silver, pink, green, blue and black.
“iPod nano is the world’s most popular digital music player, and we’ve completely redesigned it to make it even better,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, in the press release. “The all-new iPod nano gives music fans more of what they love in their iPods — twice the storage capacity at the same price, an incredible 24 hour battery life and a gorgeous aluminum design in five brilliant colors.”
With an aluminum enclosure available in five colors, there’s an iPod nano to match everyone’s individual style. The second generation iPod nano is even more compact than the original and has a brighter, more vibrant display perfect for viewing album art and up to 25,000 photos. Intuitive new features such as Search and Quick Scroll make it even easier for music fans to find exactly what they are looking for and enjoy their music on the go, and with seamless integration with iTunes 7 and the iTunes Store, the new iPod nano lets customers choose from over 3.5 million songs from the world’s most popular digital music store.
The new iPod nano supports gapless playback for enjoying albums the way they were intended. iPod nano also includes Apple’s patent pending Auto-Sync technology that automatically downloads a user’s digital music collection, photos or podcasts onto iPod nano and keeps it up-to-date whenever iPod nano is plugged into a Mac(R) or Windows computer using USB 2.0. The second generation iPod nano features up to 24 hours of battery life and completely skip-free playback.
Apple is also unveiling new accessories designed for the second generation iPod nano, including lanyard headphones, an armband, a dock, and a new incredibly compact USB power adapter which at almost half the size of the previous USB power adapter is perfect for charging your iPod while traveling. The new iPod nano features the 30-pin iPod dock connector allowing it to work effortlessly with an incredible range of third-party products, from home stereo speakers to cars featuring iPod integration. There are now more than 3,000 accessories available for the iPod. The second generation iPod nano also works seamlessly with the Nike + iPod Sport Kit, and provides support for voice recording accessories.
The new iPod nano models are now available worldwide through the Apple Store, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. The new 2GB iPod nano model in silver is available for $149, the new 4GB models in silver, pink, green and blue are available for $199 (US), and the new 8GB model in black is available for $249. All iPod nano models include redesigned earbud headphones providing superior comfort, fit and sound quality, and a USB 2.0 cable.
New optional accessories designed for the second generation iPod nano with the following suggested retail prices include: lanyard headphones for $39 (US), armband for $29 (US), iPod nano Dock for $29, and an iPod USB power adapter for $29.
iPod nano requires a Mac with a USB 2.0 port and Mac OS(R) X version 10.3.9 or later and iTunes 7.0 or later; or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 2) and iTunes 7.0 or later. Internet access is required and a broadband connection is recommended.

very impressed, they’ve obviously realised that the mini’s were so successful because of there colours…
The new Nano commercial is killer.
Yawn. What a disappointment today’s announcements were.
Yeee Haaww; But I’m dissapointed that the nano’s still won’t play video. I know I know, who would want to see video on that small of a screen, blah blah blah. Well I, for one, would.
The silver and black models are all right, but the other three are incredibly ugly.
Those sort of Disneyland colours might go down in the States but not in Europe and Asia.
“Yawn. What a disappointment today’s announcements were.”
It sure seems that way the way everybody reacts. Every possible offering that Apple could have announced as been discussed ad nauseum on this and other boards. True, there were no big surprises, but what were you expecting?
Good. My 1st generation nano looks better, and it’s black, which is now only available as 8 Gb. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
MDNMW: ‘kind’ as in ‘Steve was kind to me’.
Since it’s a minified Nano shouldn’t they call it the Nini?
“Those sort of Disneyland colours might go down in the States but not in Europe and Asia.”
Are you kidding? Japan?? Even a lot of the food is bright pink and green.
Besides, Apple wouldn’t be doing colors if they hadn’t had success with the anodized iPod mini’s. They obviously learned a lesson and replaced gold with black. Lame that black is only available in the $249 version.
“The new iPod nano supports gapless playback…”
What does “gapless” mean? Are they saying that previous generations would have gaps in the middle of songs as if the processor was consumed with some other task?
I haven’t had that problem on my mini.
i miss the chrome back nanos, those were classy. New ones feel like an updated mini more so than a remastered nano.
I appreciate the added colour choices though. maybe the new nanos will grow on me.
Switcher: Gaps between songs. Classical music, or live albums that shouldn’t have breaks between tracks. It was one of my peeves.
Apple: masters of repackaging the same products over and over again and convincing
MAC cult masses that it’s ‘new.’
I’m mad as hell that I can’t get an 8GB in Blue or at the very least Silver. I HATE black.
The big question is: do they scratch easily?!!!
Just remember folks Zune is going to kick this new nano’s butt……….BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Sorry I tried to type that with a straight face but couldn’t.
dennis,
yes, you’re right about Japan. They go in for those colours too.
But in Europe they sold mostly silver ‘minis’.
I wished they glowed ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”raspberry” style=”border:0;” /> I want one, but my library is too big for it.
Yawn. What a disappointment today’s announcements were

you guys suck
I remember when the nanos were introduced I was stunned that they had gotten rid of all color. Very happy with this announcement. But the pricing ($249 for 30GB and 8GB????) and color system (why only black for the 8GB?) are totally whacked.
Don’t you just wuv the new barbie colored nanos? will be a hit in San Francisco
I loved white. The piss and moaners won, and now we are back to the ugly-ass colors of the now defunct iPod Minis. Scratches my ass!!! I have a white Nano with zero scratches because I have the sense not to let it swirl around in my pocket with my keys and change. What a shame!!! Thanks alot piss and moaners!!!
this is quite clever. Since more people like black, it’s set as the same price as a base full sized ipod. pushing more people to consider their full sized ipods, perhaps for better profit margins. offering colour option to those willing to shell out a bit more than a base nano. and since people don’t like the impression of owning the cheapest nano.. and on another note this is crazy, since all this did was release ONE new nano, and recased the old ones. apple..clever..
Where is my orange nano???? The colors are lame unless you are 14 years old. Oh, I get it. Since I’m 40 I’m supposed to buy silver or black. Hmmmm….
I can see that these will sell really well, but I liked the old design better. Much more elegant, and looked like more of a luxury item.
I’ll probably end up getting one of the regular 30GB iPods and keeping the nano i have.
