RUMOR: Apple to launch iMac Core 2 Duo, movie store, new iPods on September 12th

Apple Store“Tuesday, 12 September is the big coming out day for Core 2 Duo-based iMacs, new generations of iPod and iPod Nano, and Apple’s iTunes Movie store, it has been claimed after Apple began mailing out invites to the media to come along to Cupertino or attend a London-hosted simulcast of the proceedings,” Tony Smithe reports for The Register.

“A satellite transmission to Europe isn’t a common Apple press conference strategy, suggesting Tuesday’s events will indeed be something special,” Smith reports.

“Apple will take advantage of a September 12 media event to introduce the second-generation iPod nano, an updated 5G iPod, and upgraded iMacs,” Ryan Katz reports for ThinkSecret.

“The event will see the introduction of the second-generation iPod nano and upgraded 5G iPod. As reported by Think Secret in July, the new nano will sport increased capacities and be available in multiple colors with a metal finish. The upgraded iPod, meanwhile, is expected to sport increased capacities at the same price points,” Katz reports. “The new iPod will not be the long-awaited touch-screen iPod, which is currently tracking for an early 2007 release. Sources have noted, however, that there remains a small possibility that the revolutionary new iPod could arrive in time for the holidays…”

“The September 12 event will also include the introduction of an upgraded iMac. As noted previously, the line is slated to receive faster Core 2 Duo processors and will also see the addition of a new, high-end 23-inch model,” Katz reports.

  1. Jeff:

Steve Jobs has been dead for over 3 years. Apple’s Robo-Steve has been needing some new parts and until they come in Apple can’t have Cyber-Steve goofing things up on stage. You really have to keep up with current events. Jeff.

  2. I agree with Kev on the subject of a new device.

Maybe the intel collaberation has Apple working on a device to sit under the TV, with a front row interface, capable of downloading movies from Apple (iCinema, iMovies ??) and burning to DVD if you want to keep them.

Or…. maybe they will just launch the movie download service first to test the water and launch complementary hardware later. Which came first iTunes or iPod (or were they launched together)??

This stuff will all be in the “one more thing”, I expect the broadcast to start with revision bumps to existing stuff (iMacs, iPods, Mac mini). PB and Macbook updates later, I expect.

    just my 2c.

  3. Or Reason 3 Steve didn’t go to Paris: He didn’t want to be travelling that close to the 5th anniversary of 9/11 — you think security’s a hassle now, just wait another week…

I attended the Seybold Expo a couple of weeks after 9/11/01. Other than half the exhibitors not being able to get there because of no flights, I got to see Steve Jobs deliver the keynote there, since he wasn’t able to make it to Paris. That was cool…

Anyway, regarding the new iPods: I still have my doubts about the viability of touchscreen, especially for those of us who still rely on them as mainly music players; how do you know you’re touching it in the right place to adjust volume or change track when it’s on your belt? Two things I’d really like to see:

    * higher capacity (my 60GB is practically full already)
    * Bluetooth capability (would love to ditch the headphone cord; it gets tangled in everything!)

Plus, Steve’s got to save something to reveal to those of us who spend the $$$ for the MacWorld keynote…

  4. <<MacDailyNews Take: Happy Labor Day! Due to Labor Day, a U.S. holiday, …>>

U.S. Holiday-!!??? RRrrright… and so is Thanksgiving, and Christmas and…. STFU MDN!!!

Why do Americans think they own exclusivity to everything??? Labor Day/Labour Day is observed in Canada as well and in fact it began in Canada!

“The American Labour Day celebration is attributed to the union organizer Peter J. McGuire, who founded the United Brotherhood of Carpenters in 1881. It is said that McGuire visited Toronto and witnessed a parade in 1882, returned to New York, and then suggested the Central Labor Union hold their own celebration in honour of workers.”

Stupid F&^ing Americans! Always co-opting shit from others in an effort to make themselves look/feel superior. Grow Up!

“MDN Magic Word – Where” As in “where” the f#@k do you all get this shit.

  5. Bubble Brains,

Did they say Labor Day was “exclusively” American? I didn’t see any claims to exclusivity. They didn’t say we are closed for Labor Day, an exclusive US holiday now did they?

Or did they really mean that they are closed on Sept. 4th, which is the US observance of Labor Day? Try to read things within context…if you can.

    Dick!

  6. Step outside the Bubble MDN!!!!!!!

I am an expat American living in Australia. I have on several occaisions been accused of being an arrogant Yank in situations similar to that which you point out above. Sometimes the cause has been ignorance on my part whereas other times it has been a misunderstanding on the part of the other individual. Arrogance was not a factor.

(By the way, I realise that Canada is in America as well, but shortly after arriving in Australia, I was accused of being arrogant because I stated that I was from “The States”. I was informed that Americans were arrogant and that I should be well aware that many other countries contained states. From that time on, I have used the Australian label for the United States, which is America, despite the fact that it completely ignores the fact that there are many other North, Central and South American countries besides the USA.)

I think MDN was clarifying for those who did not know, that the United States does not celebrate Labor Day on the first of May, which is the more common date around the world (I believe). Thank you for pointing out the Canadian role in the timing of labor day in the USA. I have always wondered about that.

    Cheers.

Yeah, or it could just be a figment of your demented imagination, Katz. Has anyone other than Katz reported that a touch-screen iPod is on the way (not counting those reports which were just quoting Katz)?

The vapor-rumor touch-screen iPod is looking more and more to be to ThinkStupid like the “Motorola G5” was to MacOSRumors back in 2001.
