Re: Google CEO elected to Apple Computer’s Board of Directors:

“Given that it is the leaders of two of the stronger cults of personality in the Valley coming together, it might better be described as the heads of two particularly funky New Age cults finding one another on a long weekend at Esalen. Sure, it feels earth-shattering to the true believers, but the rest of us can be forgiven for having little interest in all the over-aggrandized silliness being spewed,” Paul Kedrosky writes for Infectious Greed.

  1. I think it was worth mentioning because it means that someone else out there has the same opinion of this that I do. It may mean nothing at all and all this speculating isn’t even worth out time. Corporations share board members all the time and rarely does it mean that the corporations are working on secret plans together. Steve Jobs is on the board of the Gap. It doesn’t mean the gap is going to start making iPod jeans.

  2. The GAP didn’t start to make iPod jeans, but they did team up with Apple for a promotion of a free iTunes music download for trying on a pair of jeans.

Although, not a major event or impact to either company, the promo most likely didn’t come about by coincidence. Mr. Jobs surely had some influence on it happening.

  3. On board members:

The genentech tie up has allowed Apple to genetically engineer a strain of customers who believe Apple can do no wrong.

Throw Al Gore in and you explain the desire to keep going and going in the PC market even after you have no chance of winning.

Intuit explains how good they were at granting options to improve their personal finances.

The j Crew tie up explains that endless supply of black turtlenecks.

What similar innovations will Google bring?

Back to reality: People sit on other people’s boards all the time without it meaning anything.

  4. lol Ampar!

Seriously, though, can you picture two more polar-opposite people than SJ and HST?

Would make a hell of a Doonsbury strip, though…

I’d stay away from Kedrosky if he’s holding a lit cigarette–or at least put on some goggles.
