Report: MacBook Pro, MacBook to both go Core 2 Duo ‘Merom’ as soon as next month

“Apple will not only ship Core 2 Duo-based MacBook Pro notebooks next month, but also versions of its consumer-oriented MacBook fitted with Intel’s latest mobile processor – and its first 64-bit laptop chip – Asian reports [the Chinese-language newspaper the Commercial Times] have claimed,” Tony Smith reports for The Register.

  1. How quickly the world has changed.

It wasn’t so long ago that we were all complaining about what seemed like an eternity between upgrades of the Powerbook processors.

Here we are now complaining that Intel is bringing on the upgrades too quickly.

His Steveness was spot on when he said you guys (Mac users) complain about everything.

This is why I love being a Mac user. We just can’t be easily pleased so Apple have to give us the best products out there.

  2. I am still holding onto my RevA 12″ PowerBook G4 for the RevBs of the MacBooks.

Although my 12″ PB still has plenty of life left in it. It’s Apple’s fault for making the OS efficient enough to work with older hardware for so long. My 12″ PB shows no signs of slowing down at this point.

  3. IF they release the Rev B Merom Books, my bet is that it will happen after Sepetember 16. Why? Apple currently has an education deal to get free Nano with the purchase of a Mac. Adding fuel to the fire – A friend purchased an iMac last year under this program (receiving a free iPod mini), and right after the end of the program the imacs received and upgard and the mini was replaced with the nano. Coincidence? Maybe, but these back-to-school programs are a great way for Apple to clear out stock.

  4. Mermon’s will hardly be worth an upgrade until you get the Santa Rosa chipset from Intel in March… until then the Mermon will be serverely bottlenecked… i’ll just take a Rev A then wait til the new MBP’s come out next year…. reselling is very easy

  5. The wholesale price for the Merom is the same as the Yonah, at same clock speeds, so there’s no reason Apple wouldn’t put Merom in both MB and MBP, cause they can use the exact same price points.

As for the 64-bit question of Leopard, my impression was that Steve addressed it. He said something about running 32-bit and 64-bit together without issues, didn’t he?

  6. OK, so just the other night I posted on whether I should hold off and buy the MacBook Pro now for school in September. Yup, I’m the guy…

Last night I was talking to my dad on whether we should buy it that night online, and he was all for it too. Luckily, Alzheimer’s runs well in our family (even at my age! LOL) and we forgot.

So, although we hear every other week rumors on updates and all that jazz, I think this time I might hold off until the next revision. I recently got a Lacie external harddrive, and with blazing FW800, I’m hoping the 15′ MBP has FW800 this time… you’d think his Steveness would add that little goodie?

Anywho, here’s to the RevA brethren… the official lab rats of Apple’s products…

  7. Just want to be on record here, though this thread is probably history, of saying I told you so!

Now, how many out there believe Apple could have done this with initial launch of MacBook Pro & MacBook?

And, don’t tell me Intel didn’t have the chip ready… such assertion would be all the proof the marketing geniuses at Apple would need to celebrate high fives all around.

Come on, you are smart enough to take control of this travesty of mistreatment and turn it around. Make Apple deliver all they are capable of from the beginning and you won’t have to suffer this remorse.

  8. It’s not going to be a big deal going from a Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo. 10-20% faster at the same Mhz. No reason to ditch a MacBook Pro or a MacBook.

Switching from a PowerBook, I got 300% the performance in Java using things like Eclipse. I won’t notice another 20%.

The only thing that would make me want to switch would be a better graphics card in the Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.

  9. Just cancelled my MB order to wait and see…
I still want to get the rebate on the iPod Nano through the education offer though…(it goes on till 1 October here in the UK).
yes, I want it both ways (Rebate on iPod + Merom Macbook).
I hope it works out — my credit card is waiting.
