RUMOR: Apple to unveil ‘Mac Pro’ with new enclosure design, Intel Core 2 Duo at WWDC next month

“When Apple unveils its Power Mac G5 replacement at its Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) next month, the top-of-the-line computer will sport a new enclosure,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

“While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer’s case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot,” Katz reports.

“Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top,” Katz reports. “Meanwhile, sources say that a new enclosure is waiting for the MacBook Pro and will be released when that system adopts Intel’s mobile Core 2 Duo processor.”

  1. It doesn’t take a psychic to see this one coming!

A rumor isn’t a rumor if it is as obvious as predicting being hit by a train if you’re standing on the tracks and you hear the air horn blasting.

I predict that tomorrow will be July 4th. DUH!!!

  2. GmJm,

Exactly how obvious can it be when the MacBook Pro enclosure is very similar to a PowerBook? Or that the iMac upon transition to Intel stayed exactly the same? Or the unchanged Mac mini?

Now, I’ll make it easy for you:

Get back on the bus, stay in your seat, keep that protective helmet on your head and shut up until I dump your ‘tard ass back at the home!

  3. nooooooooooo!!!!
i wanted to see a dual quad core desktop mac
    damit!!
    woodcrest, where are you?
over 150 manufacturers already announced PC motherboards for two quad woodcrest CPUs!!
Apple come on, you can do better than that

  4. think its gonna be hard to resist buying the new powermac but i gots to wait for maya and photoshop (dont really wanna get windows versions for boot camp – actually dont really want boot camp at all lol) my dp 2.7 is still going strong though and holds up well.

  5. dual QUAD core woodcrests? they don’t exist, and nothing like that will be for sale by Intel until 2007. this is already known from Intel.

dual DUAL core = 4 cores and Woodcrest can do that. that’s all you can hope for this year from any company.

quad cores on one chip now? not. gonna. happen.

  6. To ease the transition to Intel, Apple’s been easing into it. The iMacs stayed the same, the Macbooks were a welcome departure, and the Mac Pros are going to be sharp. This is a way of conveying confidence– a link to the tried and true with a clear hint at new-and-bold.

The new stuff is going to be really polished. Can’t wait.

  7. I’ll take anything but plastic. Perhaps brushed titanium or titanium-aluminum laminate. I like the all-metal exterior of the G5; it is both attractive and functional. I also appreciate the systematic and orderly array of components and expansion slots inside the G5. Any improvement on this classic will be truly amazing. I hope that the new towers exude the same aura of power and performance as the venerable G5.

  8. I cry bullsh*t

“Configurations of the new Mac are said to be similar to the most recent Power Mac G5, including a single dual-core processor in the low- and mid-range systems, and a dual dual-core (quad core) system at the top

If indeed Apple puts out these models don’t buy it as it’s a total waste of money.

First off dual cores are now IN CONSUMER BASED MAC’s, so what’s a dual core Mac Pro going to offer that’s substancially better to justify the price? A few expansion options? More RAM? Big fscking deal. Dual core boxes are almost obsolete in the professional line, it’s like the single 1.6 Ghz G5 PowerMac’s. A total waste of effort to even consider them.

Intel has a Kensfield QUAD processor that’s slightly better than a dual dual-core PowerMac (quad) and will most likely be the processor used in the new Mac Pro’s Quad.

With BlueRay and intense HD rolling around the corner very VERY shortly, I would not spend several thousand dollars for a Mac Pro without BlueRay and AT LEAST DUAL QUADS!!

That’s right, because of the Quad core Kensfield processor, there is now room enough FOR TWO QUAD CORES IN A CASE.

Since processors cannot be made to really go much faster in clock speed and other improvements, the makers have been doubling up the cores. Since dual cores are the norm now quad cores will be the professional processors.

I predict not dual cores. But two lines of Quad Core Mac Pro’s and a single (pricey) Dual Quad Core Mac Pro.

The Dual Quad Core Mac Pro with BlueRay drive and HDCP would be the box to get.

  9. quad cores on one chip now? not. gonna. happen.

Kensfield – Intels “Quad core” processor, has already been leaked out. The production date is January 2006 and Apple will most likely get their hands on them earlier.

The Kensfield processor can do the Cinebench 2003 “Daylight” Mulit test in 16-18 seconds depending how much it’s overclocked.

The PowerMac Quad can do the test in 19-24 seconds, depending on which version of Cinebench is used.

  10. And just one more thing…

Because of HDCP and BlueRay drives, a special DRM will be needed to protect HD content from the processors (where it’s decoded) to the monitor.

Present Apple monitors (and PC monitors too) don’t have a DRM chip in them to decode the DRM scheme Apple will need to use so we can watch full High Def BD-DVD’s on our computers.

Also with EFI, we really won’t be in control of our hardware anymore. The OS will be run in a sandbox mode from the hardware. With all hardware calls going through EFI to gain permission to the hardware.

Try copying that HD movie with screen record software and your just fscked.

Also drives for EFI can be downloaded from the internet BEFORE THE OS EVEN LOADS!!!

Oh we are going to be hacking EFI to be able to regain control over our machines again. With the new EFI based Mac’s, our privacy is totally fscking GONE!!!.

    Don’t beleive me?

All part of Trusted Computing, HDCP and other industry controls over our hardware.

  11. So I would wait until the Dual Quad Mac Pro’s with BlueRay DVD drives are released with 10.5

I would also wait to buy a Apple monitor until the DRM chip is in them.

This would be the best money value choice of hardware.

    Your welcome. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  12. I’m not sure Apple will ever use woodcrest but it makes sense that they aren’t using it in this generation. 4 cores is already more than almost anyone needs. Of course your average top end powermac buyer is not your average user because they have practical uses for that power and they run applications that can use multiple cores like FCP, Photoshop, Motion, Maya, but other than the Apple-written-pro-apps none have gone universal. I think that a G5 quad running these things would still outperform an octo-woodcrest, or at least it won’t be left in the dust, and it costs much less than Apple’s dual-quad-woodcrest would cost. I think we are all in for a price shock when the mac pros come out. The “Power is more expensive than x86” myth was never more false than at the top, where the G5 had a tremendous performance to price ratio. Intel’s top chips usually cost 900-1000 each, probably about 5-6 to OEMs. I don’t know what the G5 chips were costing apple but if they were spending 1200 on just processors and managed to include everything else a computer needs plus the legendary Apple profit margins at 3000 I am very impressed. I expect the top of the line powermac replacement to cost several hundred more than the powermac ever did.

  13. For the love of Fair Use please don’t wait until the DRM chips are in the monitors. If we refuse to buy the things they’ll have to give up. If a critical number of users buy into all the copy protection they can sell us we’ll never get rid of it. If we keep the majority from moving into a DRM encumbered scheme maybe they will lighten up.

  14. “When Apple unveils its Power Mac G5 replacement at its Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) next month, the top-of-the-line computer will sport a new enclosure”

Wow what insight. Is Katz predicting the sun will rise at sunrise too?

“While specifics were not disclosed, the new computer’s case is said to be substantially different enough to make the distinction between the new Intel Core 2 Duo-powered system and its PowerPC predecessor easy to spot,”

35 words to say nothing? Does this guy moonlight in politics?

So there are no specifics, only guesses that a new pro deskop will get a new-style case. Y-a-w-n. It’s gotta be a slow news day when fluff like this gets headlines.
