Apple shares dip to eight-month low on news of unannounced iPod delay

“Shares of Apple Computer Inc. on Wednesday fell to an eight-month low after a Wall Street analyst said updated versions of the popular iPod digital music player may be delayed,” Reuters reports. “The stock fell 2.9 percent to $55.76, after hitting a session low of $55.41. It was among the biggest drags on the S&P 500 index and the Nasdaq market amid heavy trading.”

“American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu said that new versions of Apple’s slim iPod Nano player would ship in the fourth quarter, rather than the third quarter, due to Apple’s switch of suppliers,” Reuters reports. “While the iPod, and its companion iTunes music software and service, remain dominant in the digital music market, Apple has relied on new models and services to re-energize demand. But Wu notes that the last new iPod device came out last October.”

Waaa, waaa, waaa, the iPod changes too quickly, at least according to Saturday Night Live and others, right? So, you’d think that when Apple gives the stagnation lovers a breather, they’d at least reward the company by buying a few shares. One question remains: If Apple never promised new iPods, how can they be “delayed?”

  1. Let me see, some anal-ist predicts a new iPod line, which Apple gave no indication one would come. Then when the mythical new iPod fails to materialize on the mythical time frame, it drives Apple’s stock down, which shouldn’t have been driven up in the first place based upon mythical news.

All is well I get it now. Anal-ists s^ck @ss.

  2. The Wu idiot has double personality. It was only a week or so ago he confirmed Apple’s target price, and in the time space since then he conjures up this story and lamely ends it by cutting AAPL’s target 25%.

    He is an idiot.

  3. Do you want to know what it takes to become an analyst? Absolutely NOTHING. No skills at all. A college degree in just about any major at all. You can apply to any brokerage firm and be an analyst. Most of these guys are just out of college and have no idea what the hell they’re talking about. Their idea of research if going onto Google and searching for the company name that their “analyzing”. It’s a real joke. In all honesty, the people working at Starbucks have more specialized knowledge than most analysts.

  4. It’s probably just my paranoid side coming out, but I feel like this is related to Apple being described lately as too closed with regard to announcing their intentions to Wall Street. This come across like a supposedly “legit” issue that’s really just a shot across Apple’s bow that they’ll lower the stock price. I don’t think it would matter one way or the other to Jobs, though.

Have you ever heard of a CMT (Chartered Market Technician) and the MTA (Market Technicians Association)? Reseach before you speak, lest ye be thought a fool.

  6. Mythical iPod?
What crack you guys living in? You think there are no future iPods? You think the next iPods aren´t going to have larger memory?

You are all sounding like total ignoramuses. Wait, I forgot this is MDN.

  7. Stockboy

You are right. There will be more iPods coming. That’s for sure. The complaint is that Wu doesn’t know one is coming but still came out and said the unreleased/unmentioned iPod by Apple is delayed. Do you understand now?

  8. Waaa, waaa, waaa, the iPod changes too quickly, at least according to Saturday Night Live and others

There’s a saying: Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

First Apple’s the bad guy for changing the iPod too quickly, and next thing you know Apple’s the bad guy for not changing the iPod fast enough. WTF. Sometimes you just can’t keep anyone happy.

At least new iPods WILL be out for the holiday season.

  9. The “insiders” on Wall Street play this game all the time to line their pockets. The increased volatility will also affect the derivative pricing. In this game, it’s winner take all and if you’re not “in”, you’re “out”.

I pity the poor fools that fall for this stuff!

  10. dead cow,
Wrong. It wasn’t a mythical OS because MS came out and said it was codenamed Long Horn. Then it became Vista. So many years ago, before it was known as Long Horn it was mythical. Maybe then it was Unicorn? Are you okay now!

  11. MikeR,

    ????

Vista is mythical because it has yet to be seen in its entirety. And like all good myths, it changes over time.

MS came out and said it was codenamed Long Horn.

Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster have names too.
