Computeract!ve: Apple MacBook ‘the best of both worlds’ – 5 out of 5 stars

“The MacBook replaces the iBook, Apple’s line of relatively cheap notebook computers aimed at consumers and, and the Apple PowerBook, which catered to professional users who value portability over power,” Ben Tudor writes for Computeract!ve.

MacDailyNews Note: The MacBook replaces the iBook and the tiny 12-inch PowerBook. The MacBook Pro – Apple’s 15- and 17-inch professional notebook model line – replaces the 15-inch and 17-inch PowerBook models.

Tudor continues, “All of the Macbook’s ports are on the left hand side of the computer. We were also impressed with the power cord, which sticks to the computer with a magnet. This sounds daft, until you realise that quite a lot of notebook computers are written off because the power cord has been tripped over or yanked out, destroying the socket in the laptop that it plugs into. The MacBook’s screen is glossy – Apple always used matte screens in the past, which didn’t reflect ceiling lights, but always looked a little dull. The glossy screen shows off blacks and whites well, but fluorescent lighting also splashes off the screen – we’re undecided as to whether this is a better deal.”

“The two Intel processors – either 1.83GHz or 2GHz – make the MacBook romp along with either Mac OS X or Windows XP running,” Tudor writes. “In short, we think the new Apple MacBook is smashing. It has great looks, power and battery life (up to six hours). It can run both Windows and Mac OS – truly the best of both worlds… Rating: 5/5.”

  1. Well, I guest Silivo is not happy today?

In the case of the Macbook, It is not a bad system since it is very easy to change a hard drive now. A real big plus!!!!!

The Mag Connection for the laptop may seem to be a joke……but!

My iBook was pulled of the top of a counter by a puppy. Upon landing on the concrete floor the frame was tweaked a little but still worked-by some unknown luck.

I HIGHLY PRAISE THIS MOVE TO THE MAG CONNECTION!!!!!!!!!!!

Funny, I was just telling some coworkers by the water cooler that I think the new MacBook is “smashing”.

  3. Hortense just bought the base model in white (like milk) to replace her damaged 12″ PowerBook, which has a very bent aluminum case. She absolutely loves the computer, except it weighs a touch more than the 12″. The larger (wider) screen is at its best playing movies, and the extra screeen space makes it somewhat more useable than the 12″. As for burning DVDs, this time Hortense decided to use (faster) external burners because they keep evolving and so there was little reason to get the more expensive Superdrive machine. Hortense put two 1 gig rams in her MacBook so has two redundant 256 meg rams, and suspects many other orphaned rams are out there waiting for Apple to do the right thing and take them back for a small credit at the Apple online store, for example. That way they could recycle them.
Anyway, this MacBook is the best yet, and Hortense has tried them all. No complaints at all. It’s easy to put in new rams BTW. Just put the book on its edge and push down HARD to seat the little buggers. What is a 256 meg ram worth anyway?

  4. My 1.2 GHz, year and half old iBook looking terribly dated now, jeez.. but I can wait… for Rev B. sometime next jan? … with 10.5 and iLife ’07 installed, plenty of ram, ….yum, makes me drool.

    mw-life, nice.

  5. Get yer RAM at oempcworld.com – they will buy back those little 256mb dudes for about $11-12 each. So you end up getting about a $25 discount off of their great price for 2 x 1GB chips of $190. So you get 2GB for about $165 (before shipping).

    Yow!
