Apple ‘iPhone’ inevitable, but not imminent

“Apple Computer will make a cell phone, but we won’t see it anytime soon, according to American Technology Research. ‘While we firmly believe that Apple has been working on cell phone technology, we believe its much hyped imminent entry is overdone,’ wrote analyst Shaw Wu in a research note Tuesday,” Maya Roney reports for Forbes. “For Apple to enter the U.S. cell phone market, it would need approval from the Federal Communications Commission, Wu noted.”

“A filing would be required at least three months prior to an actual product launch, according to the analyst. So far, Apple has applied for and received WiFi and Bluetooth approval, but there is no sign of cell phone activity yet,” Roney reports. “That said, Wu believes it is ‘inevitable’ that Apple and other PC manufacturers enter the cell phone market over the next few years for both offensive and defensive reasons, but also for the simple reason of convergence. He said Apple could enter the market as early as mid-2007, but more likely in 2008 or 2009. In the meantime, he expects Motorola to continue introducing iTunes cell phones.”

  1. I love Sony Ericsson, but I’m sick of having to order them from Japan–SO expensive. The US carriers are terrible and consistently offer mediocre phones.

My K750i is just going to have to last me until the iPhone.

  2. Maybe Apple can set up a deal with the new president of Mexico after election in July to KEEP people from crossing our border and give them work in an Apple iPod factory. That should help their economy and keep illegal immigrants out of the U.S. A win-win situation.

In fact, tech companies should ALL move their manufacturing jobs and customer service operator positions to Mexico.
