And not just play Nintendo games, but play Nintendo games specifically tailored to the strengths of the Mac Mini’s hardware? Would Apple have a viable console on its hands? And if so, could it penetrate the mainstream consumer market with Macintosh computers in a way that has constantly eluded it in the past?”

They’re a Japanese company with a long history.
They’d never sell to Apple.
I personally just don’t see it happening, it doesn’t seem to be an area that Jobs wants to get into, plus Apple isn’t a company that sells things at a loss like Sony and Microsoft do, just to garner market share…

Personally I would just like to see mutual usage of things like bonjour to enable some sort of chat between networked apple and nintendo machines. A webkit based browser with which you can sync your bookmarks etc. In terms of the hardware, games etc becoming one and having some sort of hybrid machine I wouldn’t be interested. I would run them separately but make sure their stuff worked well together in a network capacity.

Totally left-field, but v. interesing.
Without any concrete facts however, I’m not going to waste time thinking about it.
Knowing the history of competition between Japanese and American companies, from autos in the 70s and 80s to Kodak and Fuji’s latest spat, and of course the console wars, I’m going to have to say this will never happen.
However, my next console will probably be a Wii.
Why would Nintendo even want to be bought out? They’ve been doing fine for decades. A partnership MAYBE (That’s a HUGE maybe. There’s no benefit to Nintendo besides some minor extra cash) between Nintendo and Apple with really old Nintendo games ported to the Mac but not Nintendo being bought out.
Then they will bring out the Wiiipod…
or the Wiiiphone…
Apple should buy Nintendo or even Infinium’s Phantom console. Either or both would be a fine addition to Apple.

The Nintendo DS is butt ugly. How in the world can you even associate the DS with Ives? That is a huge insult.
Hmmm. Interesting thought.
But . . How about this: Apple and Nintendo come out with an adapter that plugs into a Mac mini (or other mac) that costs less than a Nintendo but gives you the best of both. You play all your Nintendo games on the combo but its cheaper than buying a full up Nintendo.
