Apple adds Discovery channels, Travel Channel, TLC, Animal Planet TV shows to iTunes Store

“Now, new possibilities are opened for people who want to use Discovery’s high-quality knowledge-rich content on the go, while we also promote Discovery’s television networks,” said Don Baer, Senior Executive Vice President, Strategy & Development, Discovery Communications, in the press release. “Wherever they are and whenever they want, consumers can use the iPod to learn and be entertained with Discovery’s content about people, places, cultures, science, health and much more.”

“We’re thrilled to bring video programming from Discovery Communications to the iTunes Music Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes in a statement. “Customers can now choose from a wide range of great video content from Discovery’s family of networks.”

  1. TOP GEAR

    TOP GEAR

DAMNIT! When in the hell can we colonists get to see the proper Queen’s version of Top Gear without having to wait forever?!?!

I’m pretty sure that there is not a show on that has ever existed with cinematography or as honest hosts as Top Gear. The camera work on that show has got to be some of the best i’ve seen TV or in film… its so enticing and so energetic, but then can go dramatic and subtle in a moment’s notice when it suits the show.

    brilliant!

  2. Can you get Top gear over there then? It certainly is a fantastic show these days no matter how much I hate Jeremy Clarkson.

Actually the Discovery deal may well bode well for BBC programming to become available as so much of the nature stuff is tied in with Discovery these days. I think the main problem is the cost structure which presently will probably conflict with its charter, at least for shows sold in the UK.

  3. For the record, I do agree: “Top Gear” is simply one of the best shows on TV today. Even non-car geeks like it. The new season (started last week) is just great.

And it’s awesome to see the iTunes video store doing so well. Hats off to Apple for making it all work.

Anyway, my real point is this: I really want to buy videos from iTunes. I do. Hey, I already buy all my music from iTunes. But… when the hell will they increase the quality of the video?!? I have purchased one video from iTunes (a “Desperate Housewives” episode) and was appalled when I displayed it (via Mac mini) on my 42″ plasma. It’s worse than VHS! I won’t buy another iTunes video until the quality is better.

OK, so I don’t necessarily expect full HD quality, with all the HDCP mess that might entail, although that would certainly be nice. But for God’s sake, give users an option for something that’s at least watchable on a normal TV, even at a small price premium!

If I’d pay $1.99 for a video (which I did), I’d pay $2.25-2.50 for a higher quality version. I don’t watch this stuff on an iPod, but I’d happily pay for the convenience (read: not messing around in newsgroups/Torrents) to watch it on my big TV. Come on, Apple: 480p isn’t that difficult!

MW = “simply,” as in “Simply increase the video quality, and I’ll buy a ton of this stuff.”
