Aspyr Media, Inc. has released a free update for QUAKE 4, which updates any previous version of QUAKE 4 to version 1.2 (Universal). The download (102MB) is available at http://www.macgamefiles.com/detail.php?item=19123
This official update addresses issues found in both multiplayer and single player since the release of the game, and includes several new multiplayer maps.
In addition to the changes and fixes outlined below, this update enables QUAKE 4 to take advantage of the SMP of Intel Core Duo Processors. Players who have computer systems with this processor will notice significant performance gains in QUAKE 4.
With the update, Intel Core Duo based Apple computers, which uses the SMP, will have a performance jump of 15 to 30 percent. In short, systems with this technology will see the game run faster and smoother than before.
As with any new technology, SMP is reliant upon several components working in unison. Such components include the motherboard, CPU, GPU, system ram and sound card.

– fixed widescreen and aspect ratio support
– fixed server IP information within non-dedicated server

OK, how about updating Doom 3 for Mac to take advantage of SMP too?
It decompresses to a 124MB PowerPC-only updater application. The updater is not universal binary – LOL – but don’t worry, it updates Quake 4 to the latest universal binary.
It also upgrades the DVD checking, so don’t run this if you are using a pirated copy. =)

It’s interesting Mac news because all of the current intel macs have dual-core CPUs, and this version of Quake 4 is the only computer game EVER to get significant (30-50%) performance gains from a dual-core or dual-CPU computer. This is basically the big “SMP patch” that showcases the dual-core processors.
In other words, it’s proof that dual-core CPUs are the way to go, even for gaming. It’s a good thing Apple went with Intel.
Did they release a patch for the demo too, oh yeah that’s right, there’s no demo.

Nick, not all Intel Mac’s are Core Duo’s. There are Core Solo Mac minis as well. I’d also expect to see a low-end Core Solo MacBook/Intel iBook when they come out.
