Foxtrot comic strip centers on Apple Mac’s ability to run Windows natively

Today’s “FoxTrot” comic by Bill Amend pokes fun at Windows’ deficiencies (spyware and virus plague) while highlighting the large volume of game software available for Windows. It all begins with little Jason’s desire to get “one of those Intel-powered iFruits” because “you can run Windows on them.”

Today’s Foxtrot is here.

  1. Pop-Up Ad Hater,

So, you think it’s okay to deprive MDN of ad revenue? The site is already free! Here’s an easy way to disable IntelliTXT pops – don’t roll over them.

If everybody blocks MDN’s ads, for how long will there be an MDN to screw over?

Take it from someone who’s tried the ad-supported website business, if you think MDN doesn’t cost anything to run each day, week, month, year – you are very wrong. You think hosting is the only cost? This site is obviously staffed all day long!

Simplified for dunces: The ads support the operation of this site. That’s why it’s open and free to everybody. If you block the ads or nobody buys anything from the ads, the site gets no revenue and then the site dies. We’ll know who to blame if that ever happens.

  2. Michael–

Fine..the ads on the sides of the page are sufficient then. No need to get aggressive w/ ad ‘trickery’ to get us to notice. More often, it just annoys us than informs us. If I want services etc, I’ll view the ads in the sidebar. Stop forcing sh*t down people’s throats..

  3. prut prut.

Who are you to say what’s “sufficient” in covering MDN’s expenses? Are you privy to MDN’s expenses vs. revenues figures?

Take if from someone who knows what LinkShare, Google AdSense, Fastclick, and direct ad sales can bring in – the side ads very likely cannot support the total cost of running this site.

MDN have been very transparent with what they are doing:

I believe MDN are just trying to cover costs and make a little profit, not trying to buy houses in the Hamptons.

  4. That is not me above, but they are correct: I don’t work for MDN. I used to work for a website that tried to do ad-supported back in 2002-03, but it could never achieve break-even.

Those who like MDN should support their advertisers, not block them – that’s all I’m saying. The ads support the site. That’s why they’re also sometimes called “sponsors.” It’s just common sense.

  5. MDN spends all its ad revenue on trying figure out new ways to put more ads on its pages.
Most of the ads on MDN are affiliate-type ads. MDN gets money only if you buy something.

Wonder why no big name companies advertise here? Guess they know everyone here is all talk and no buy via the internet – most here probably don´t even have a credit card.

  6. To those suggesting “don’t put your mouse over the ad links” —

It’s not that easy. Gotta put my mouse over the frame to use the scroll wheel, which I need to use to read the articles because the text area isn’t wide enough because there are already so many ads on the side.

As I scroll, the words move under the pointer and the popups come like crazy.

At least limit the # of ads per article!

  7. The top feature on MDN is the comments section.

You could just rotate these story lines every week and you would get a raft full of comments:

    1. Reporter says Apple going out of business.
    2. Windows has new OS coming.
    3. Rumor: Apple bringing out a new (fill in the blank).
    4. Stock analyst says Apple stock is going (fill in the blank).

  8. Foxtrot is a good comic. With the Jason character, the author makes some pretty good jokes about the technology/geek world with some great refernces to programming, computers, Apple, Star Wars etc. Some of the jokes are probably a little techy for Mr. and Mrs. Average America, but anyone who deals with technolgy on a regular basis can get a laugh out of it.

  9. That’s odd, PC Apologist. I use the scroll wheel too, and almost never accidentally mouse over an ad. Maybe you have coordination issues.

I swear, the attitude of entitlement I read in these comments make me want to puke. If you really can’t enjoy the site without freeloading, please piss off and move to one of the umpteen other Mac news sites on the web.

  10. Larry B.:

    You forgot:
    6. Studies show that more (Democrats, zealots, liberals, Bush haters, blue states, pinko commies, Kool-aid drinkers, etc.) buy more (Macs, PCs, software, online music, games, lingerie, illegal drugs, laxatives, style over substance, ointment, strawberries, Lhasa Apsos, etc.) than (Republicans, conservatives, zealots, Rush lovers, red states, tight ass suits, tax shelter escapees, Hillary bashers, rich snobs, etc.). The first and third lists are interchangeable at any time for any reason.
