As unpolished and unfinished and… unfascinating as the Origami was, I have to believe that someone got wind of what Apple has been working on and quickly rushed something to market in order to capture the glory.
All of these tablet/handheld patents from Apple we have been seeing (and if you read Macsimum News (there has been upwards of 40 over the last half-year) were filed 6-12 months ago. Origami had 3 months – maybe 4 months of work at the MOST put into it when it was released.
crazy about trying to see the point in them haha, sure apple would do it better but these patents having been popping up for how many years now?
This is not news. Retread story with a new title. Who’s idea was this?
What the Origami fiasco proved is that true ‘stealth’ marketing can create a real buzz, as the media was just jumping all over this story.
What it also proved is unless there is a really good product behind the buzz, people will see though it and there will be a loss of interest or even a backlash.
Microsoft created this buzz and they can’t back it up. Apple creates this buzz, people call it hype, but it sticks because they have the products to back up the hype.
FWIW ive seen more stories in the media about the iPod since Origami was announced than I have stories about Origami.

Crazy Apple Rumors time.
Apple patents lots of stuff, even builds them, but never puts them on the market.
If America were tech-crazy like Japan, then we’d see a lot more gagets like this out on the street.
I think Apple would need a new interface paradigm to control a computer comfortably with one hand while holding it with the other. My 12″ PB is easy enough to do that. It’s a little awkward and heavy, but you’ve got to have a way to hold a tablet-like device that’s comfortable.
This idea doesn’t look comfortable. It looks like a wrist-breaker.

The media was talking about Origami for a couple of weeks, but once it was actually announced, no one was interested any longer. Unlike Apple, who sees actually going crazy for their products when they are released.

Ron is absolutely right. Microsoft saw the patents, thought something cool was about to be launched at Apple’s 30th Anniversary, and rushed something out in a classic spoiling tactic.
All this “Microsoft always copies Apple” stuff must be hurting Mr Gates’ pride…

BTW, the iSwan is waterproof, runs on fish oil, and looks real ugly when yoou first take it out of the box. It becomes incredibly beautiful after you use it for awhile.
Uhhh, if Apple has a patent for the arc keyboard, cant they sue Microsoft and take what little money those stupid oragami’s have made? The only way these oragami things will ever succeed is if they make it with an OLED screen that folds in half so it can fit in your pocket, otherwise…no sale. Id rather have a 12″ low power thin macbook if they made them.

I know one thing: Origami units have MS XP for an OS.
And the world was excited over that?! Besides being unusable by the execs doing the intro, it must be just as useless for anyone else. XP is all you need to know.
Apple will have one out for Sept/XMas season. The difference will be that Apple’s unit will be slick, well-designed and enormously and easily useful.
