“After a swanky dinner with the world’s richest man, Chinese President Hu Jintao turns his attention to America’s largest exporter, whose sales to China could help ease tensions over a growing trade gap. Hu, who dined Tuesday night at the home of Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates, was invited to tour Boeing Co.’s Everett plant on Wednesday, just days after Chinese officials confirmed a commitment to order 80 Boeing 737 jets, in a deal valued at $5.2 billion at list prices,” Allison Linn reports for The Associated Press. “The big Boeing deal is one of several purchases the Chinese made recently as officials try to ease tensions over the massive trade gap between the two nations. It’s one of several issues President Bush is expected to raise when Hu heads to Washington, D.C., later in his four-day U.S. tour.”
Linn reports, “Touring Microsoft’s suburban Redmond campus earlier Tuesday, Hu said he admired what Gates had achieved. He also sought to reassure Gates that China is serious about protecting intellectual property rights, a key concern for the company as it battles widespread piracy of its Windows operating system there. ‘Because you, Mr. Bill Gates, are a friend of China, I’m a friend of Microsoft,’ Hu said through a translator. ‘Also, I am dealing with the operating system produced by Microsoft every day,’ he added, to laughter. Gates responded: ‘Thank you, it’s a fantastic relationship,” and then quipped: “And if you ever need advice on how to use Windows, I’ll be glad to help.'”

Damn, that’s a good interpreter! That translation perfectly conveyed in English the idea of how Windows users like Hu feel about that operating system.

How do you stop it crashing Bill?
How do you stop viruses attaching themselves without user intervention Bill?
How do you sleep at night Bill?
Listen to what he said.
“Also, I am dealing with the operating system produced by Microsoft every day,”
I dunno but when I tell someone I’m ‘dealing’ with something generally it means its a problem that I am struggling with.
Looks like the Chinese president is part of a very large club who thinks it’s normal to put up with the crapware known as Windows.
Ask Bill what this blue screen mean
Ask Bill to make dedicated Alt – Ctrl – Delete combo Button
Too bad Apple is shut out from the huge Chinese market… Microsoft scores another monopoly!!!
MW: It makes me “ill”
It’s a translation, people. Going crazy over the word “Dealing” is a joke. It’s probably just the closest word the translator could think for “uses”.
The bigger deal about this story is that China is talking to MS.
There is already a “dedicated” CTRL-ALT-DEL button on every PC – it’s called the PWR button. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />
No one’s going ‘crazy” over the word dealing. Perhaps it’s a translation error perhaps not, but the simple fact is that people spend plenty of time dealing with Windows and i thought it was funny.
You are the one getting all bent about it, not me. Stop listening to the voices in your head.
I went to China, and there were pirated PC software. However, there was absolutely no pirated Mac software. I saw people were crazy about the iPod, iMac and other accessories. Trust me, the Chinese are indeed civilized!
Also, the Chinese are getting really rich nowadays. People with the purchasing power are driving Ferrari cars. Therefore, I’m sure they’ll also be choosing the Macintosh.
APPLE IS A HOMO!!!!
Hey Lemons –
“Apple is a Homo !!!”
my brother in 4th grade would say it takes one to know one . . . but I would never say anything as childish as that. . . ever
President Jintao said, “I am dealing with the operating system produced by Microsoft every day.”
To which Bill secretly thought, “Yes, but did you pay for it?”
Corrected translation:
“I am having to deal with Microsoft Windows every day!”
And in another goodwill gesture, Bill offered to change Microsoft’s marketing slogan to, “Who do you want to censor today?” Hu Jintao giggled with delight.
Also, I am dealing with the operating system produced by Microsoft every day
Sums it up exactly
And if you ever need advice on how to use Windows, I’ll be glad to help
Hey Gates! I think he already knows how to use it, he was refering to all the other stuff one has to put up with.
Hu Jintao is no doubt seeking advice about how to inflict dictatorship at all levels of his operating system.
macromancer: Thanks, but we knew.
“Settle down…”: Thanks, but we knew – and it’s still funny.
Ha-ha. You macheads are such losers. The two largest new markets for computers – China and India – go with Windows (and some Linux), and the most you can think of is wonder what “dealing” meant. In a decade Macs will be history.
Welcome to the real world, fools.
“In a decade Macs will be history.”
Apple Computer. Going out of business for forty years and counting.
macromancer:
OK. Maybe “crazy” was a bit strong. But the whole point of this story being posted on MDN is to incite a reaction to the “dealing with” phrase. Being a translated quote, I thought this was a bit of a stretch.
Do you disagree? Or are you going to resort to allegations of schizophrenia again?
MW: face
People Ready. That is the Kool-Aid this time around from Microsoft. People Ready.
Apple’s latest computers have socketed motherboards, multiple OS booting capability and no viruses. That means they’re adapable, son. That means Not About To Die.
Please excuse MDM from skool, everyone. The poor thing is suffering from a terrible case of the stupids.
China has modified the new MS slogan slightly to:
“People Ready. Tanks Also Ready.”
China should help close the U.S. trade gap and purchase a site license of Windows for the whole country. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Let’s see … $100 a pop for 250 millionish computers would only be about $2.5 billion.
Not that I want Gates to get any richer. I just thought that’d be a good idea. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
