Apple CEO Steve Jobs plans new 50-acre campus in California

“Apple Computer Inc. is planning to build a new, 50-acre campus near its present headquarters in Cupertino, California, company Chief Executive Steve Jobs said. ‘What’s happened at Apple is that our business has basically tripled in the last five or six years,’ Jobs said on Tuesday evening at a Cupertino city council meeting, which was recorded and viewable as an archived Webcast. He said the company ‘has gone from $6 billion in sales to $20 billion in sales, basically.’ Analysts expect Apple to post $20.3 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2006 ending in September, according to Reuters Estimates,” Reuters reports.

“Jobs said it would likely take three to four years to design and build the campus that could accommodate 3,000 to 3,500 employees. An Apple spokesman, who was present at the meeting, confirmed the company’s plans to build the second campus,” Reuters reports. “Jobs said that, in addition to its current Cupertino headquarters, Apple employees are spread among 30 other buildings. ‘We’ve rented every scrap of building we could find in Cupertino,’ Jobs said, who noted that Apple had recently purchased the nine separate, contiguous parcels.Apple plans to raze the buildings now on the property and design and build new ones, Jobs said. The new campus will be about a mile away from its current headquarters.”

  1. I think that it shows Jobs character as an individual.

All that we ever hear is how much of an Ass Hole that Steve Jobs is , however a CEO of a world wide company address the city council personally instead of some lower level management person has to make you think differently of him. I ask you when was the last time that you ever seen Gates or Balmer address Redmond WA. city council.

I feel that many feel that Jobs is an Ass Hole is because he doesn’t let employees half ass a project…it must be perfect.

  2. How come when I go to my council meetings I’m begging that they let me modify my property just a teeny tiny bit, yet when Steve goes he simply states, “we bought up nine properties in Cupertino and are going to build a 50 acre project. Well… that’s all. Just wanted to tell you what we’re doing. Goodnight.”

That’s a rhetorical question by the way. I know why. It’s must be nice being a Prince of Silicon Valley.

  3. That council has the power to say “no” to his project. Merging 9 properties into 1 and building a 50-acre campus is a very big deal. That’s why he addressed them personally, and that’s why he made a big show of mentioning that they were looking elsewhere besides Cupertino. He’s a master, I’ll give him that. He didn’t ask permission, he basically told them what he’s going to do, and made them feel like he was doing them a favor. He did make one little comment about “and there’s a bunch of approvals we’ll need to get” at the end, after his main speech, when all the council members were licking his ass.

  4. “every day it’s a race to see who can get here earliest, because the last 20 people or so to arrive end up having to park a good distance away because the parking lot is full.”

Limit the number of spaces to get your employees to come to work early? Wow, what an idea!

Er, don’t talk to my boss!

  5. Two questions –

    1. With all those seats empty, where did the applause come from? Does the city council have an applause machine?

    2. Why does the Cupertino City Council use Real Player? Does the Redmond City Council use QuickTime? I would bet they don’t.
