U.S. actors close to reaching deal on iPod residuals

Members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) are likely to receive a residual payment of 2 cents every time their performance is downloaded or accessed on a cell phone, computer, or portable video device, according to a New York Post report, citing an unnamed industry source.

The Post report quoted a SAG spokesman, “Unions are seeking or are engaged with producers in serious conversations over what residual formula ought to be applied to new distribution platforms like downloads and mobile phones.”

The Post report said that an agreement between producers and the two unions regarding the new media is likely to be reached “within weeks.”

  1. That’s not an iPod residual, it’s a “new media” residual, a royalty paid by the content owner to the SAG member. Calling it an iPod residual implies that they’re going to be paid on the sale of iPods.

  2. It seems odd that they would charge per actor, that would make My Dinner with Andre very cheap and Gladiator very expensive. It also seems that some actors are worth more than others so how do they calculate that. Also a cell phone download does not have the same valve as something you can watch on the TV.
A better idea would be a percentage of the download fee goes to the actors and that percentage is divided.

  3. Some of these morons in Un-Holywood make tens of millions for pretending to be someone else and are idolized, while a CEO gets a multi million retirement after working for forty years and benefitting millions of workers and stockholders and gets castigated. Only in America.

  4. This has nothing to do with apple– rather this is strictly between the content owners and the actors. The content owners have been shafting the actors and not giving them proper royalties on online sales. Any royalty payments will come out of the 80% (or whatever) share that the content makers get per sale.

  5. “First “graphic designers” need to be licensed, then comes a union.”

I’m all for licensing too. It would weed out morons with no formal training, who “got a copy of Photo Shop” (misspelling intentional), and stop them from taking jobs from those of us with an actual education and lowering our salaries. I have tools in my garage but that doesn’t make me a mechanic.

  6. Last I saw, a grip of the movie companies were offshore. Even for U.S. based companies, they still rip you off for dvds and cds. So , if a DVD costs 15-20 bucks, and the movie made 200million or something like that, then where did all the money go? Seriously. These companies need to secure their rights and have a working agreement w/ any guilds. This ‘let them sue us and we’ll sort it out in court later’ thing is getting ridiculous.

Video costs too much already. itms doesn’t make a lot of money considering the volume. This definitely isn’t an ipod tax. This is about studios raping everyone including the actors. So give us back some of that offshore money and if you’re based here give it back as well. That way all the actors can pay tax on their income and enrich america like everyone else does.

Of course the greed goes around everywhere. Did you get paid in the first place? Answer = yes > continue to your next job, do not pass go, do not collect money for being washed up.

Talk about greedy. As for the ‘accessed’ part. That had better be the INITIAL access. If they want 2 cents per extra everytime I pop gladiator in my mac they can do what the rulers of rome did.

MDN MW= Three. Next we want three cents per extra.
