RUMOR: Apple delays new video iPod for redesign of touch-screen interface

“The roll-out of Apple’s forthcoming video iPod has been delayed substantially after the company encountered problems with the display and touch-screen interface, Think Secret has learned. As late as early February plans were in motion for Apple to deliver the most innovative iPod to date in April, possibly a tie-in with its 30th birthday, sources said. Instead, Apple’s birthday came and went without fanfare,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “Sources speaking on condition of anonymity say issues emerged with the technology that have sent Apple and the display’s manufacturer back to the drawing board to find a solution. As such, a more definitive release date is unknown at this time, but sources say Apple expects the new iPod to be ready by calendar Q4, in enough time for the holiday buying season.”

“Multiple sources have stressed that Apple will not launch the video iPod without a movie agreement in place, and that a movie store will not open without the video iPod. The impasse in negotiations lies in the terms of sale: Apple wants to sell movies affordably a-la-carte as it does with music, but Hollywood wants a subscription deal,” Katz reports.

  1. Some posters have said that a subscription model is preferred for something like a movie you will only watch once. Lets not confuse subscription with rental.

Dish, Direct TV and Cable are subscription models. If I have a subscription I pay every month. It doesn’t matter if the TV is on 24/7 or if I only watch 1 show the entire month. This is what companies want. A revenue stream that never ends. How would it be to have money come in even without someone using your service or product? The ultimate something for nothing.

Hollywood Video, Blockbuster and others are a rental model. I only pay for what I watch. The rental model is great for the end user. This is what RIAA and MPAA want to avoid. You know, actually having to produce a decent product that people want and are willing to pay for before getting any revenue.

I would love to see a purchase/ rental movie store. BUT I will never pay for a movie or music subscription

  2. Apple is waiting for Microsoft’s Super Duper8 to be released before blowing it away with the new iPod. Steve Ballmer designed it in an attempt to keep his iPod-screaming children happy.

The miniature e-z-thread projector with a periscope attaches to your belt (available option). The screen, attached to a steel loop around your head, hangs in front of your eyes.

Hollywood is lining up behind it because Ballmer vowed that movies will be subscription-based, though, as yet, only one episode of Kukla, Fran and Ollie is known to be a Super Duper8 contender.
