“Despite Apple’s historic disdain for Microsoft’s Windows operating system, Apple’s Boot Camp software lets Windows applications run just as well on a Mac as they do on a PC, performance tests confirm. According to tests carried out by CNET product reviewers, a MacBook Pro and iMac running Intel’s Core Duo processor and Windows XP delivers equal performance to similarly configured PCs designed to run Windows. On Wednesday, Apple released a beta version of Boot Camp, an application that lets Mac users run the Windows XP operating system on their Macs,” Tom Krazit reports for CNET.
“While the results may seem obvious given that the systems had similar configurations, they help answer some of the questions raised by consumers or businesses thinking about running Windows on a Mac when Apple releases a new operating system with Boot Camp integrated later this year,” Krazit reports. “Apple wants Windows users to fall in love with the Mac OS, and the best way to do that is to remove any objections to a dual-boot Mac, said Sam Bhavnani, an analyst at Current Analysis. If an Apple system running Windows wasn’t as good as a comparable Windows system from another PC vendor, some people wouldn’t want to take the plunge, he said.”

Actually, because one partitions their hard disk to install Windows, the new partition gets to use the slower part of the drive, near the center of the platters where the sectors are smaller.
This is of course if one creates a large enough XP partition on already near full drive.
So I wonder how many of these “tests” are inaccurate based upon this?
If the tests used are based upon the drive somehow, then they will be way off.
The only way to get a accurrate test is to create a similar partition on a PC.

I wonder how much the “comparable” PC systems cost. I see the benefit from a current Mac users perspective, but I don’t see the switcher benefit. The Mac is a foreign object to most and will remain that way until Apple freakin’ advertises this new capability until everyone watching the nightly news knows they can put XP on a mac AND it runs as good or better. Only us geeks are still talking about it. But, Apple probably dosen’t care about that. They won’t advertise it. Oh well whatever-it just benefits us mac users.

The main difference is the Mac OS, just like it was a year ago. People buy macs because of OSX and all its advantages and lovely applications.
Boot Camp just means people can keep their PC games and finally throw away their old PC hardware.

What a load of PC users don’t understand is that Apple now build PCs. They happen to be better PCs because you get OSX and anything else you want to load as well.
Just get over it.
If you don’t want XP or Vista you don’t have to load it on your Mac. Just carry on as normal.
The fact is that there is NO comparable PC system out there because only Apple computers will run both OS X and Windows XP natively. Of course the Mac may cost a little more, but then again, so does an Alienware or a Sony, or any other premium PC. And none of those others will run OS X either…

The sectors on a hard drive are all the same size (in bytes), there are the same number of sectors on every track, and the speed of rotation is a constant.
Think about it.

You don’t have your chief software guy who created the mach for OS X suddenly leave the company for no reason other than to “pursue other interests”

The reason Vista code is being rewritten is because Apple is working with Microsoft.
Microsoft allowed Apple to have the online music market, they could have easily aced Apple out, but didn’t.
All these bigwigs, Apple, Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, IBM, Dell, Gateway etc., they all get together for parties and social events where they “talk shop”, reason is competition costs money and people’s jobs. They crave stability and growth combined together against ASIA!!
Boot Camp is not going to change the landscape at all. I may end up being wrong (hopefully), but at least I’ll be consistent until I’m proven wrong.
It no more signals the end of Apple as we know it than it signals the end of Doze and Dull. A year or two from now, the argument will still be over how much better the new 10.5 is worlds ahead of Vista or how the new Vista is worlds ahead of 10.5.
But as much as I love Apple, if they increase penetration to, say, 7% US over 4.3% US as they are now, I’d fall over in a faint. The discussion, if there is one, will be why is it that, in general, most people prefer the status quo, not that BC changed the world as we know it.
I think if you’ll re-read Morty’s post, he’s saying that, because the PC in the test was probably not partitioned in the same way that the Macs were, that they may have had an advantage, so the Macs would actually have been better than the PCs. Boy is that wrong! The FASTEST area of any hard drive is closest to the center of the disk. Think about it: the read/write head has less distance to travel where the sectors are closest together, resulting in less latency wait time for the heads to position themselves over the place to read/write. This is why, unlike a phonograph, information is written from the center of the HD disk out to the rim instead of the reverse.
Although, were talking milliseconds here. It makes a difference when accessing large amounts of data.
montex: I’m not disagreeing with you, but are you sure? It all depends on the size of the sectors relative to their location on the disc. You might be right. But a point on the middle of a spinning disc will always move at a slower speed than one on the outer rim, which could make a difference in read-write times.
To be more precise, I should have said “a point near the center,” not “a point on the middle.”

PC any brand runs Windows, Linux (various flavor).
The answer is a no brainer. A PC runs less software and less OS. I would need to buy a Mac to run as well OS X and its native applications.
I would not need to buy anything else if I had a Mac.
Hence, the Mac is WAY CHEAPER
