RUMOR: Apple ‘iPhone’ put on hold

“Contrary to published reports, two independent sources speaking on condition of anonymity recently disclosed to Think Secret that Apple’s cell phone ambitions have been put on hold as the company has encountered ‘significant technological hurdles’ in developing the product,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “Apple is said to have wanted to develop its cell phone from the ground up and not merely redesign or re-brand an existing phone with a different interface. In the process of doing so, however, sources say the company has run into problems making the various cell phone components work together. Issues also have cropped up with the chip Apple was using that receives the cellular signal.”

“Timelines had originally called for a possible third-quarter release of an Apple cell phone, but these issues have delayed any roll-out indefinitely. Those waiting for an Apple phone, rumored for a number of years, may find themselves waiting into at least 2007,” Katz reports.

  1. Regardless, any phone would have to undergo testing and certification from the FCC before it could be released.

FCC filings should be able to provide more details about this product if it ever comes to be.

  2. Hold the iPhones, everyone! There’s something really big coming…um…well…maybe…wait…still waiting…okay, maybe not…

I’ll believe there’s an iPhone when Steve Jobs himself is onstage at a MacWorld Expo holding one of these purportedly fabulous devices and THEN only when he says those magic words “Shipping today for only…”

  3. Hi, MacDude here again. It’s been at least 2 and half minutes since I last posted, so I’m back with more useless and depressingly ill-informed rhetoric.

    Thanks.

Oh, damnit! Forgot the really big, bold, look-how-important-what-I-have-to-say-is formatting again… Doh!

  4. “Apple ‘iPhone’ put on hold”

I’m sure Apple has a lot in the pipeline. So, I’m getting a busy signal from this one. They’re not static for long in Cupertino. They certainly have the touch to set the right tone. Give ’em a hand that they’re not set in their ways. Pretty clear message that doesn’t leave me wired. That has a nice ring to it.

  5. I hope Apple takes their time and really does this right. Not just a better cell phone–but looks at our mobile needs and the possibilities given Apple can do a lot since they control the OS and the hardware. (Sorry Windows folks.)

After just going through the process of buying a new cell phone, I think the need for Apple is large. The selection is terribly flawed in one way or another.

Accordingly, I will buy the Apple phone the day it comes out, so I can’t wait. But with that said, I hope Apple takes the time to do it right…

  6. Yeah, iPhonie news. I love it. Actually, if there’s any truth to this story at all, this is really good news (even if the iPhone project eventually gets cancelled). I thought for sure that this was going to be another RCKR phone project; just another licensing deal.

I had no idea that Apple would decide to redesign the mobile phone from the ground up, but if anyone could do it, Apple can. The best thing that could happen is that the rest of the mobile phone manufacturers would get off of their asses and start redesigning their own models of phones.

Sounds like a win-win situation to me.
