Apple has declared the end of the 20-inch 2.1GHz PowerPC iMac.
“While the product remains available on the company’s UK store, a note to resellers distributed today declares the product officially, ‘End Of Life,'” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK. “‘With immediate effect, the following product and it’s relate configurations are ‘End of Life’ (EOL) and no further orders can be taken,’ Apple explains.”

As PPC production lines are closed, more production capacity becomes available for Intel Macs.
This annouoncement is just more evidence that the transition is going well.
The next thing to look for is EOL of PowerBooks.
It’s been end of life since the new model came out, it’s just taken a while to empty out the old inventory from the Apple warehouse.

In the past, I purchased two different G3 end of life Macs. I won’t be making that mistake again.
Well, maybe for one or two hundred dollars, I would. Ok. Three hundred tops. lol.

I wouldn’t count out the PowerBook, PowerMac, or Xserve just yet. There’s still nothing from Intel for those and I’d bet that a PowerBook running Photoshop/Xpress/InDesign will run rings around a MacBook Pro doing the same.
The iBook, on the other hand, should definitely be getting it’s affairs in order.
(As an aside, I’m waiting for Apple to “blow out” the G5 Quads once the Macintosh Pro machines are announced. I will so be there…)
I’m glad I was able to get one before they disappeared. My family loves it as a home computer especially that darn remote. They enjoy watching movie trailers. Front Row definitely has a lot of potential.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I’d love to buy a Quad for a blowout price too, but Apple has not really offered much in the way of discounts on the old hardware. Folks are buying it because they see it’s the end of the road for the old stuff and they’re grabbing up the old stuff to insure a year or two of running all the existing software… damn the luck.
Still we can hope, I’d love to have a G5-Quad.
Whatever you decide, don’t even be tempted to buy a reconditioned Mac from Apple. My reconditioned G5 purchased from the online Apple store has been in to have the mobo replaced 3 times 🙁
But I’ve rarely had even the slightest problem with new Apple product purchases.
Wow, I just bought my 20″ at an Apple store last week for $1050!!! What an excellent deal. This is an absolutely beautiful computer and very fast. I’ll be quite happy to wait a year for the Intel transition to complete before I would think about replacing it.
