Apple to hold World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC 2006) in August

Apple today announced WWDC 2006 will be held August 7-11 in San Francisco, CA. Last year, June 6-10, WWDC 2005 attendees watched Apple unveil its plan to transition to Intel microprocessors and then headed to the lab to run their code on Intel-based prototype systems. This immediate, hands-on access to the newest Apple technologies happens for developers at WWDC and nowhere else. WWDC 2004 ran June 28 – July 2 in San Francisco.

Apple is offering the “WWDC E-ticket & Select Membership Bundle” were developers can save $400 when they buy an ADC Select Membership and register early for WWDC 2006.

  1. The yearly upgrade to the OS had to slow eventually, since the upgrade has to be ‘significant’ this must surely be the law of diminishing returns. Now Apple has to focus more attention on it’s software and hardware. There is the big growth to be made, who knows maybe there’s a Mobile OSX in the cupboard.

  2. insider tip from an Apple rep (15 yrs under his belt) NAB is going to be the Big Show, WWDC just for Leopard!! ok maybe the WWDC part I made up but NAB is going to be the show, watch out for Final Cut Extreme and some new machines.

  3. My prediction:

A demo of the key new features to Leopard, followed by a “One More Thing…” announcement with stunning new Mac Pro’s using Dual Dual-Core Conroe chips.

    It makes perfect sense- Apple can kill two birds with one stone by pushing back WWDC;
    1) Microsoft will have less time to copy whatever is in Leopard, which will probably make Vista look like a pile of trash in comparison and solidify Apple’s lead in the OS market (seeing as how there has been some talk of Vista catching up to Tiger at least in some areas)
    2) Allowing Conroe to be ready

I think we will also see several other product events in the meantime, however, including a new model of iPod and MacBooks… and possibly something else entirely on April 1st!

  4. “…..and solidify Apple’s lead in the OS market”

um, I’m a certified Macfanatic™, however I think that sentence needs a rewrite.. Apple’s lead is creating the most advanced/professional OS, but the market has a ways to go before catching up to that fact.

  5. This August date makes it more likely that an April 1st, 30th Anniversary, announcement is due. Apple isn’t going to leave the last announcement of the HiFi and Mac mini as the latest products for the spring/summer. Apple needs something really advanced for the critics and reviewers to munch on until August.

Steve had already announced that Leopard will be out in late ’06. Other than IBM’s 3Ghz failure, Steve has never been late with a product. He is usually early which makes it very possible that Leopard will be released in August. This, also, gives Apple a jump on any Vista announcement. And when MS does, it will look even more like a very bad copy of a Mac.

  6. NAB in April is going to be a huge roll out for Apple.

    Updated Pro Software Apps
…..Final Cut Pro and Express version
    …..Logic and Express version
…..Cheap Mac Book (the computer formely known as iBook)
    …..and some other surprises

Apple does not need to wait until WWDC or late in the year to release a high performance workstation, I’ll bet money on it! Intel needs revenue and Apple needs pro machines. Here’s a hint:

    New Intel MacPro configuration:
65-nanometer (nm) dual-core Xeon server processor
code-named Dempsey, which is reportedly on track to
begin shipping by the end of the first calendar
    quarter of the year.

Dempsey — which packs HyperThreading support, a
1066MHz front-side bus, and Demand Based Switching and
Vanderpool Technology — is expected to run at speeds
    between 2.5GHz and 3.46 GHz

    On WWDC
The date has been pushed back to give Apple a little more room to hedge around what MS introduces. The next Mac OS update is going to answer Vista with a full broadside assault.

My studio uses a lot of software apps and yearly Mac-OS updates have been painfully expensive to keep up with. The move to Intel is another big cost hurdle ahead.

I personally do not mind that the OS-X revision rate has slowed a bit. 10.3.9 earns me money every day!

  7. microsoft is going to get alot of media attention for vista, how longs it been since xp? 5yrs?

its going to happen, the question is does apple delay their leopard release, i mean we all know microsoft already basically has just copied (albiet a poor copy) the mac osx.

why give them any more ideas for free?

theyre vulturing off mac os X (nothing new) but why shouldnt we play it smarter and not give them the opportunity this time.

if apple releases leopard b4 vista, microsoft will hold their release and try and implement whats in leopard.

of course theres always the argument that apple shouldnt really give a toss what ms does and go on their own schedule. im just not sure on this one.

  8. “um, I’m a certified Macfanatic™, however I think that sentence needs a rewrite.. Apple’s lead is creating the most advanced/professional OS, but the market has a ways to go before catching up to that fact.”

I meant in terms of design, not marketshare =)
