RUMOR: Apple soon to debut video iPod with 4-inch display, to roll out with iTunes movie service

“Apple’s forthcoming ‘true’ video iPod will feature a 4-inch display with a quarter-inch border, allowing the device to maintain dimensions typical of previous iPods, further sources have confirmed. Think Secret first broke word of the upcoming touch-screen iPod in early February,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret. “The new iPod remains on track for an announcement possibly as soon as late March or early April but sources caution the roll-out could be pushed back pending an agreement with the movie industry on distributing feature-length content. Apple is said to be looking to launch the first movie content for sale on the iTunes Music Store in tandem with the new video iPod.”

  1. i must be the only one who’s actually quite happy with the video playback on the current ipod. it works for me, and even if apple does release something fancier and better, i won’t feel burned because as i said, i’m happy with what i have.

MW local: as in, i wish rockford, IL had a local apple store!

  2. I have to say, from all the comments I’ve read about bandwidth issues and high video quality expectations from potential users, if Apple can pull this off, they truly will deserve to be at the top of the media distribution market.

  3. I would love renting with an option to buy with movies. With music I know what I want and I want to listen to it again and again. Most movies, in my opinion, are only worth one viewing at the most. But there are some I want to keep so a subs/buy model would be great.
Of course this same logic could apply to music as well. But a 3 minute song that you’ve heard a clip of is a lot easier to buy for .99 than a two hour movie you’re not sure if you want to own yet.

Anyway, mark my words, it shall be dubbed
    ViPod

    (I like that name)

  4. MacDude: Want to know how little I care? Don’t you have anything better to do than bitch and moan?

And as for this “touchscreen iPod”, I still say that’s the stupidest @#$%ing idea I’ve ever heard, and if Apple does release it, it will be the stupidest product they’ve ever released! Yeah, let’s control our video iPods by smearing fingerprints all over them.

  5. I just don’t see this happening yet. It’s too early. The last iPod just came out in October. Even if it was an interim version until the full-screen edition was released, six or seven months is simply too short of a product cycle. iPod product cycles seem to follow at least a year.

I think this makes more sense being released in October. I’m thinking a replacement for the iBook at the announcement in April and maybe some other stuff. At the WWDC you’ll have 10.5 and then the replacement for the G5, rounding out the Intel-based Apple product line which will be perfect for the developers conference. Then in October, a new iPod and the iTunes Movie Store, just in time for Christmas.

  6. MacDude, since you “have found two Mac related websites that were purposely exploiting these vunerabilities.”

Why would I click on any site you recommend?

MW = form as in some “form” of mental illness.

  7. I think vPod is a better looking name. My credit card already started quivering and bouncing up and down. Stop teasing us Apple and let us start buying, already. I do trust them, though, they won’t release it unless they’re really happy with its design.

You know, these new dual core Intel Mac minis might cause some serious switching. Apple should include a copy of that Move2Mac software (or license it) for free. Just a little extra incentive. I’ve been surprised by die-hard PC friends suddenly seeming open to the concept of OSX.

  8. I agree, No video iPod yet…

Apple just announced leather cases for the fifth generation iPod that aren’t even shipping yet… There is no way another iPod will be released before the cases for the last generation model even ship…

  9. At the risk of saying something topical…

…Steve is having problems getting the studios to green light the content. What they don’t realize is that Steve’s solution means getting paid for every copy of every movie on every iPod. If they don’t do this, people will buy DVDs, rip the content, and put one DVD on as many iPods and computers as they want. Have it your way, gentlemen.

The big question for me on the new design is screen resolution. Will it be a blown up of 320 or something truly sick, approaching DVD resolution in 4 inches of real estate (640x). If so, I’ll have to have two iPods, one for music and one for video, since it won’t all fit. My 60gig 5G has 23gb of music and 23gb of 320 videos (movies, videos, and TV shows). I only have 8gb left and stack of DVDs yet to go!

[it adds up if you remember that 5gb are lost in formatting]

  10. Matt — you’re not the only one who’s pleased with the picture as it is.

Just right for me, and in fact at elbow’s length the apparent screen size is actually a little bigger than my lounge TV across the room! Mind you, the ‘main’ TV is only a 14-incher!

Either way, no worries — a bigger screen might be nice, but not if the machine itself has a bigger form factor.
