Macworld posts Apple MacBook Pro 2.0GHz first lab tests

“Our first MacBook Pros arrived yesterday—three 2GHz models bought with our own coin—and the testing started immediately. Macworld Lab has been churning away on benchmark testing, and we’ll post a review with complete in-depth results later this week,” Jason Snell writes for Macworld. “In the meantime, I’ve been using one of the other MacBook Pro systems as my main system for about a day now. That’s right, I’ve taken the plunge—after a wait of a couple of hours while Apple’s Migration Assistant application copied all my files over from my PowerBook. The end result? This shiny new Mac laptop may be packed chock full of hot new technologies on the inside, but it still feels like home.”

Snell writes, “So, in the interest of immediate gratification and in advance of our forthcoming review, here are some notes about the MacBook Pro after 24 hours spent in its thrall.”

Full article with some first test results, including information that “Photoshop is clearly usable on these new systems, but there’s no denying that processor-intensive tasks will take longer to execute so long as a Universal version of Photoshop is unavailable” and “at least in our first test, the battery life of the MacBook Pro seems in line with the battery life on the last-generation PowerBook G4,” here.

  1. wow.. I’m sitting here agonizing over weather to buy one of these macBook pro puppies… or riding out my trusty(honestly, not so trusty…the logic board has been replaced 4 times in the last year and a half) Ti PoweBook.

P.s. anyone else staying up watching iTunes pass 1 billion?

  2. sure…I’m up for the countdown..think I’m going to buy at 999,950,00.

so if you buy an album…does that count too?.. when is a purchace ..a purchace.. when you push the buy button..or when it is finished downloading?

  3. I have no idea…I’m just trying to think of what would be a good song for the 1B download…don’t want to be known as the lucky bastard who downloaded Lionel Richey.

Right now I’m going with ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’…think that would have some appropriate irony

  4. I am certainly staying up… and buying some good classical, opera, and soundtrack music while I’m at it.

But really… the chance of any mere mortal actually winning is so low, it is nearly subatomic.

  5. The better frame rate on the Mac Book Pro in UT2004 is mainly because of the better video card.

UT2004 will throw the sound onto the other core, but the bottleneck is the single memory controler and bus, so that kind of even things out there.

UT2004 is getting old, the next version of course will run like a snail on your brand new Mac Book Pro.

    I wonder why Doom 3 wasn’t tested?

    Hahhhaha!!

Do you know MacWorld Magazine is/was funded by Apple?

Oh yes kiddies, read all the gory details, we have been decieved.
